Vijay Iyer is jazz pianist, electronica musicus, componist, bandleider, producer en schrijver en woont in New York.
Niet denken in beperkingen is één van zijn specialiteiten. Zijn enorme lef is opnieuw te horen op het nieuwe trio-album Break Stuff (ECM). Het trio maakt cutting-edge muziek, die toch ook toegankelijk blijft. Geworteld in de jazztraditie, maar innovatief in stijl en vorm.

Op Break Stuff draait alles om de ‘break’, het moment in muziek waarop even een ‘stop’wordt gemaakt; een tijdelijke ‘breuk’ tussen het voorafgaande en het vervolg. (Een solo break in jazz is bv. het moment waarop de ritmesectie heel even stopt om de solist alleen te laten). Vijay noemt de break datgene wat er gebeurt nà de afgesproken muzikale thema’s. “Het is een moment waarop je moet handelen. Het is de basis voor verstoringen, breakbeats, en breakdansen … het moment waarop alles tot leven komt. ” Hij ziet overeenkomsten tussen breaks in de jazz, hiphop en Indiase muziek.
Hij bracht al 20 albums uit als bandleider en iedere keer is zijn benadering origineel; of het nu om eigen werk gaat, om het gebruik van polyritmiek, om samenwerkingen met Indiase musici en met dichters, om intelligente bewerkingen van bekende stukken of om een thematische rode draad op een album.
Hij is naar eigen zeggen geen typische virtuoos en toch is hij een groot voorbeeld voor de huidige generatie jazzpianisten, juist vanwege zijn originaliteit en zijn unieke timing.
Niet alleen speelt Iyer, die graag met Aziatische ritmes stoeit, op dit album eigen werk; ook waagt hij zich met zijn trio aan indrukwekkende bewerkingen van composities van grootheden als Thelonius Monk en John Contrane.
Vijay Iyer groeide op in New York als zoon van Indiase Tamil-ouders. Op driejarige leeftijd begon hij met viool en als kind leerde hij zichzelf ook piano spelen. Na een universitaire opleiding in het in techniek en kunst met muziek als afstudeerrichting in Berkeley (California) vestigde hij zich weer in New York om daar naam te maken als jazzpianist. Vanaf begin 2000 bouwde hij aan een indrukwekkend oeuvre dat hem aan de Amerikaans jazztop bracht. Vooral Iyer’s virtuoze spel, de alom aanwezige Aziatische invloed en zijn eclectische manier van werken vallen op.
In 2010 kreeg hij de award voor Jazz Musician Of The Year, uitgereikt door de Jazz Journalists Association. Het is een eer die eerder o.a. Herbie Hancock en Ornette Coleman ten deel viel. In 2014 werd hij gekozen tot beste pianist in de Downbeat Critics Polls en ook dit jaar gooit hij hoge ogen, onder meer met het nieuwe trio- album Break Stuff (ECM). Met datzelfde trio bracht Iyer in maart 2012 het album Accelerando uit, de opvolger van het met prijzen overladen Historicity uit 2009.
Daar tussen in maakte hij twee albums, Solo (2010) en Tirtha (2011).

Vijay Iyer werkt(e) samen met veel cutting-edge artiesten: saxofonist Steve Coleman, toetsenist Craig Taborn; trombonist/componist George Lewis; dichter Mike Ladd; choreografen, filmmakers, dichters en andere progressieve musici wo Rudresh Mahanthappa, DJ spooky, Steve Lehman, Tyshawn Sorey, John Zorn, Ambrose Akinmusire. Hij haalde een doktoraat in de cognitieve muziekwetenschap. Iyer componeert ook hedendaagse kamermuziek.

Vijay Iyer is jazz pianist, electronic musician, composer, bandleader, producer and writer living in New York.
Not thinking of limitations is one of his specialties. He ghas guts, and that’s also featured on the new trio album Break Stuff (ECM). The trio makes cutting-edge music that stays accessible. Rooted in the jazz tradition but innovative in style and form.

‘Break Stuff’ is all about the ‘break’, the moment in music where a ‘stop’ is being made; a temporary break between the previous and next. (A solo break in jazz appears when the rhythm section briefly stops only to let the soloist go on alone). Vijay calls the break “what happens after the agreed musical themes. It’s a time when you have to act. It is the basis for breakdown, breakbeats, and break dancing … the moment when everything comes to life. “He sees similarities between breaks in jazz, hip hop and Indian music.
He released over 20 albums as a bandleader and every time his approach is original; whether it is because of his own work; the use of polyrhythms; collaborations with Indian musicians and poets; intelligent processing of famous pieces or a thematic approach on an album. He claims he is not a typical virtuoso and yet he is a great example for the current generation of jazz pianists, precisely because of his originality and his unique timing.
Iyer, who likes to play Asian polyrhythms, put a lot of his own wortk on the album; also he and is trio ventured into impressive arrangements of compositions of great musicians like Thelonious Monk and John Contrane.
Vijay Iyer grew up in New York, as a son of Indian Tamil parents. At the age of three, he started to play the violin and as a child he taught himself to play the piano. After a university education in arts and engineering with a major in music in Berkeley (California), he settled in New York to make name as a jazz pianist. From early 2000, he built up an impressive oeuvre that brought him to the American jazztop. Especially Iyer’s virtuoso playing, the omnipresent Asian influence and his eclectic way of working stand out.
In 2010 he received the award for Jazz Musician of the Year, awarded by the Jazz Journalists Association. It is an honor previously granted to ao Herbie Hancock and Ornette Coleman. In 2014 he was chosen as the best pianist in the Downbeat Critics Polls and this year again he gets top marks for the new trio album Break Stuff (ECM). With the same trio Iyer released the album Accelerando in 2012, the successor to the award-winning Historicity in 2009. In between, he made two albums, Solo (2010) and Tirtha (2011).
