Jim Black

Human Feel: zelfde verhaal!

Jim Black Malamute

Restless, mobile, but with a clear direction: that’s how the ‘malamute’ is being described, the sled dog from Alaska. The same goes for the band Malamute from New York, and especially for drummer and band leader Jim Black.

Malamute is Jim Black’s most recent group with like-minded music spirits.
The music is fluid – every few minutes something new happens. A kind of short-term focus approach to improvisation and compositions that keeps the listener close.

In Malamute, Jim Black works with the Icelandic jazz saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson, Elias Stemeseder – keyboards and Chris Tordini – electric bass.

The four musicians approach the music with an open mind (and ear) and are constantly looking for adventure.
Jim has a kind of multi-tasking approach to drumming and uses not only the parts of the usual drum set but also bells, scales, hands etc.
Black’s own projects have a tendency towards a frayed and experimental sort of groove, forming a basis for free avant improvised music. Kind of a free jazz approach, where musically everything can happen, sometimes in different layers straigth throug each other.

Strikingly inventive and versatile is Black, who can and will play all sorts of music, if only it is experimental and adventurous. He constantly changed the boundaries of jazz and rock.
Jim Black (1967) originates from Seattle, but has been living in New York for a long time. He played with many from the adventurous jazz scene and had several own bands.
Alas No Axis is one of his own projects, with music that is more in line with post-rock with rhythmic shifts than with jazz. The collective is more important than the individual solos. With Chris Speed – tenor sax, clarinet and Hilmar Jensson – guitar and Skulli Sverisson – bass.

The experimental, jazz & rock-like approach was also to be heard in Endangered Blood, another own quartet with Chris Speed, – tenor sax, clarinet, Trevor Dunn – bass and Oscar Noriega – alto sax

Human Feel: same story! With Andrew D’Angelo – alto sax Kurt Rosenwinkel – guitar Jim Black – drums Marty Ballou – bass. Founded in 1987 when these four graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston,

Some older projects – with Black as sideman are Tiny Bell Trio of trumpet player Dave Douglas and Pachora of string player Brad Shepik. Here more Balkan music dominates, with odd meter rhythms.

Other ensembles in which we find Jim Black include a trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and pianist Elias Stemeseder. And the improv trio bb&c, with saxophonist Tim Berne guitarist Nels Cline (from Wilco).
Other musicians with whom he played: Ellery Eskelin, Uri Caine, Kris Davis, Ben Monder, David Binney, Satoko Fujii, Carlos Bica, Cuong Vu and Laurie Anderson.
