Vocal Jazz – Soul
Singer Lizz Wright impresses everyone right from the first note with her warm, low, soulful and incisive voice.
Her roots lie in the deep south of America, resounding in all her songs: they range from sweltering hot to spiritual depth. It went fast since Wright was noticed in 2000 with her impassioned contribution to a Billie Holiday tribute. She got a record deal, gave performances throughout the Americas, did promotion in Europe, sang at various festivals and was listed in music magazines like great singing promise.
lizz wrightHer debut “Salt” was a soulful album with jazz and R & B; successor “Dreaming Wide Awake” jumped in on the singer-songwriter tradition with beautiful serene, spiritual songs in the sphere of countrypop, blues and jazz. With The Orchard she took the listener back again to the places of her childhood in Georgia with languid soul, gospel and rhythm & blues. Her latest album, Fellowship in 2010, was a gospel album. Not the swinging form of gospel, but the stripped one, that formed the basis of the genre, with a beautifully understated tone that tends at times to blues.
She surprised several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival and every time she does that again.
Lizz grew up in a small town in Georgia, as one of three children of a pastor. Her father was a pianist and orchestra leader in the church and that’s how Lizz learned to sing. After having played the piano as a child and having sung church music, she also got interested in blues and jazz. During high school she won a lot of gospel singing competitions and later studied classical singing at the Atlanta State University.

Lizz Wright also plays 22 Ocober in Flagey, Brussels and on 23 October Paradiso Amsterdam.
