Hij richtte zijn zen-funk kwartet RONIN op in 2001, in vervolg op zijn werk met RITUAL GROOVE MUSIC. Samen met Kaspar Rast (drums), Thomy Jordi (bas. Hij werd in 2011 vervangen door Björn Meyer) en Sha (bas/contrabas klarinet). Percussionist Andi Pupato kwam bij de band van 2002-2012). Nik Bärtsch (1971) studeerde aan de Musikhochschule te Zürich en later filosofie en linguistiek aan de universiteit aldaar. Later verbleef hij nog enkele jaren in Japan. In 1980 startte hij al zijn eerste bandje met slagwerker Kaspar Rast (1972).
Vanaf 2001 werd hij leider van zijn zen-funk kwintet Ronin. Samen met Kaspar Rast richtte hij zich in workshops op de combinatie van muziek en lichamelijke beweging, bijvoorbeeld met technieken als akido en Gyrotonic.
Met de groep Ronin maakte hij zes albums, waarvan de laatste vier op het label ECM verschenen. Na drie bijzondere studioalbums ‘Stoa’, ‘Holon’ en ‘Llyria’ volgde in 2012 het dubbelalbum ‘Live’, met concertregistraties van over de hele wereld.

Minimalist Zen Funk! A great name if you have to tag what kind of music the group of Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch is making. Complex rhythms layering on each other with long repeating patterns and subtle and then sometimes sudden changes. Minimal music with funk grooves and the serenity of Japanese ritual music. The music hypnotizes and swings at the same time and carries the listener into a musical trance. Every Ronin concert is a total experience with an impressive light show as well.
Nik Bärtsch was once called ’the scientist or groove’ by a newspaper in Zurich.
He founded his Zen-funk quartet RONIN in 2001, following his work with RITUAL GROOVE MUSIC. Along with Kaspar Rast (drums), Thomy Jordi (bass. Replaced by Björn Meyer in 2011) and Sha (clarinet /bassclarinet). Percussionist Andi Pupato joined the band from 2002-2012.
The music always follows the same aesthetic vision in various instrumental configurations: creating the maximum effect with minimal means. The music consists of short phrases and motifs, constantly combined and layered in different new ways.
The Ronin Rhythm Clan is an extension from the original group to eight people. A small big band you can call it; they create mysterious music that is both highly disciplined but also leaves room for individual interpretation.

Nik Bärtsch (1971) studied at the Musik Hochschule in Zurich and later philosophy and linguistics at university. Later he spent several years in Japan. In 1980 he started his first band with drummer Kaspar Rast (1972).
In 2001 he became leader of his zen-funk quintet Ronin. Along with Kaspar Rast, he focused on workshops on the combination of music and exercise, for example with techniques like Akido and Gyrotonic.
Ronin made six albums, of which the last four appeared on the ECM label.
After three remarkable studio albums ‘Stoa’, ‘Holon’ and ‘Llyrìa’ followed the double album “Live” in 2012 with concert recordings from all over the world.
