Chick Corea, 75th Birthday Celebration: Homage To Heroes
Zondag 10-7 Amazon, 19:30

In 2011 kwam de Return to Forever IV World Tour.

Chick Corea, 75th Birthday Celebration: Homage To Heroes
Sunday 10-7 Amazon, 19:30

Last year pianist Chick Corea (1941) played at North Sea Jazz with fellow legend Herbie Hancock, but this time the spotlight  will be on him alone. Corea is a pianist with a tremendous track record, beng one of the most influential pianists in the history of jazz. A pianist/keyboard player who connects an extensive piano technique to jazz, fusion, jazz rock, but also melodic lyricism.
He was a winner of major music polls many times and has a really huge record and CD oeuvre.
And with such a large repertoire, it is not surprising that Chick Corea can be easily found on the internet: in this blog a selection of 12 videos and audiotracks including a whole concert with Miles Davis and a concert with jazz musicians at the famous Woodstock Festival.

Many people know Chick Corea from the time he played with Miles Davis and subsequently leading his own jazz-rock groups such as Return To Forever. But Corea also made a lot of albums with freer and acoustic jazz including the legendary Now He Sings, Now He Sobs from 1968. In 2015 he made the double album Portraits, a tribute to heroes of jazz history.

At his 75th Birthday Celebration the pianist will be honoring greats like Bill Evans, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and his old mentor Miles Davis. Together with a quintet that – next to him – consists of trumpeter Wallace Roney, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Marcus Gilmore.

In 1968, Corea joined the band of Miles Davis (he replaced Herbie Hancock) and he played ao on Filles de Kilimanjaro and Bitches Brew. The rhythm section consisted of Corea on Fender Rhodes, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Dave Holland on bass and Miles Davis’ band became famous with its innovative free jazz rock style. In the early seventies he left the band and became active as a leader in Circle, an avant-garde jazz group with Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul.
Around this time he discovered L. Ron Hubbard, leader of Scientology. Corea became a Scientologist and would continue to cite Hubbard as inspiration. The last two albums with his Elektric Band are dedicated to Hubbards literature.

Corea became quite unhappy about the level of abstraction in free improvisation that was ging on in that time. He focused on making his music accessible to a wider audience, which meant: commercial. In 1972 he founded Return to Forever. The line-up of this group often changed, but bassist Stanley Clarke stayed. The first band played mostly Latin-oriented fusion. Mid 70s the band reached its peak with the album Romantic Warrior.
In the early eighties Corea also wrote classical compositions (including Crystal Silence). Mid 80s he returned to jazz. The Chick Corea Elektric Band (with Dave Weckl drums; John Patitucci bass) he made several records, including Light Years in 1987 and he continued to play an important role in fusion. Across all electric music he also set up a new Acoustic Band, also with Dave Weckl and John Pattitucci.
From 2001, there was a New Trio, with drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Avishai Cohen. And then a Super Trio with drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Christian McBride.
A few of the many names with whom Chick Corea played furthermore are Michael Brecker, Chaka Khan, Bela Fleck, John McLaughlin, Stevie Wonder. In 2011, the Return to Forever IV World Tour.
Today – still – he often plays solo concerts; duo with bassist Stanley Clarke; duo with vibraphonist Gary Burton. And Vigil, his most recent (Latin) jazz fusion sextet with Carlitos Del Puerto – bass, Marcus Gilmore – drums, Tim Garland – wicker, Charles Altura – guitar.
