Zaterdag
 29 oktober
The Pack Project met Jorrit Westerhof ft. Eric Vloeimans

Omer Avital – bass, composition, Avishai Cohen – trumpet, Joel Frahm – tenor saxophone, Yonathan Avishai – piano, Daniel Freedman – drums

Zondag 30 oktober

Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles | Dhafer Youssef | Makaya McCraven | Omer Avital Quintet | Ben van Gelder Quintet | The Pack Project met Jorrit Westerhof ft. Eric Vloeimans | De Raad van Toezicht | Einzelgänger  Bart Wirtz

Friday, October 28th
Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles: funk, jazz as well as rock, electro, rock and dance, and somehow always groovy.
Everyone knows keyboardist Cory Henry from the successful band Snarky Puppy. In recent months, Henry as Hammond organist toured with his Revival project at leading festivals. With his harmonically rich playing and incredible virtuosity he connects jazz with gospel and thus makes a one of a kind sound. In September, his first album with The Funk Apostles was released, the upbeat funk band he plays with at this festival. Cory Henry – keyboards; Nick Semrad – keyboards; Andrew Bailie – guitar; Antoine Katz – bass; Taron Lockett – drums; Darius Owens – drums
About Cory Henry is a blog on this site: HERE

Makaya McCraven
Organic beat music

With his roots in jazz and world music drummer Makaya McCraven brings a unique and powerful sound in the jazz scene. He is one of the pioneers of the jazz scene in Chicago and considered “one of the most versatile and much sought after drummers in Chicago” (Chicago Reader) and Downbeat Magazine called him “exceptionally on the drums.” Makaya McCraven switches quickly between genres and styles. He worked with numerous musicians including Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Bernie Worrell, Soulive and Marcus Strickland.

De Raad van Toezicht is a 12 piece Dutch band, with a new generation of young musicians. Playful, super solid and inspired by the style of bands like Weather Report, Pat Metheny and Snarky Puppy. They play originals only: a contemporary mix of jazz, funk, rock and Latin. The grooves are subtle, sometimes heavy and thick and – important – danceable.

Saturday October 29
The Pack Project by Jorrit Westerhof ft. Eric Vloeimans
Who are the young talented jazz musicians from the Netherlands? For the fourth time the festival presents The Pack Project, where a promising young jazz musician acts as a bandleader. That musician gets the opportunity to put together a new band, to write music, to be performed at the festival and later on record it on a CD.
jorrit-westerhof
This year, the honor goes to guitarist Jorrit Westerhof. He graduated from the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. He’s a sharp playing guy, who’ s idol (or at least one of his idols), you can hear in the video. (Psychedelic rock with blues and improvisation in it. Raw sound, feedback – so who am I referring to?) The music is as underground as the video: nice & dark in an obscure jazz cellar.

Einzelgänger (‘Loners’) is the new trio of Rotterdam trombonist Louk Boudesteijn, reed player Nils van Haften and guitarist Anton Goudsmit. What’s in a name?: these are three stubborn loners of all trades. A trio with an unconventional line up (sax, trombone, guitar. So no rhythmsectio with bass and drums). That brings opportunities. Musically speaking it spreads out in all directions. Sometimes the trio acts introverted, but just as often it doesn’t. They can make heavy noise as well. Also humor is important with these guys. Watch the video. Their debut EP is called Musica Gymnastica! The musicians (literally) bend over backwards meanwhile improvising playfully. The music that leaves room for unexpected turns.

Omer Avital is an Israeli bassist, making a catchy mix of jazz and oriental music. He belongs to a generation of famous jazz artists from Israel, like bassist Avishai Cohen. In his music he refers to his half-Jewish and half Arab origin. The quintet consists of an energetic group of Israeli jazz musicians making a name in New York.
Avitals music is a kind of metropolitan mshmash of oriental melodies to intoxicating North African desert blues.
He’s leading the band with such enthusiasm that he has already been compared by leading american jazz magazine Down Beat with his legendary bass colleage Charles Mingus. That’s not just because he is a very good bass player and band leader at the same time, but also because he is seen as the founder of this new and fresh direction where jazz is mixed with lyrical and sentimental melodies and catchy Middle Eastern rhythms. (Qualities that Mingus had too). Bassists are generally speaking no bandleaders, but Avital clearly is: he is not standing at the back of the stage, as we see jazzbassplayers normally do. He stands at the front, in between his hornplayers. Omer Avital – bass, composition, Avishai Cohen – trumpet, Joel Frahm – tenor saxophone, Yonathan Avishai – piano, Daniel Freedman – drums

Sunday
Ben van Gelder Quintet
The new album Among Verticals of Ben van Gelder Quintet came about from a composition assigmment by The Jazz Gallery, one of the main venues for contemporary music in New York. Saxophonist Ben van Gelder composed a suite bringing together different styles and idioms: classical composition, the Cuban abakua culture and improvisation. Important source of inspiration is a work of the Czech painter František Kupka. As a composer, he takes the example of one of his mentors from his time in New York, Jason Moran.
From his 18th Ben van Gelder lived in New York for ten years. He developed his lyrical style with role models Lee Konitz and Mark Turner. He worked with contemporaries like Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks. In the Netherlands, he plays in The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble and in his trio with Reinier Baas and Han Bennink, an important source of inspiration for Van Gelder as well. Now he’s here with his American band. Ben van Gelder-alto saxophone, Peter Schlamb-vibraphone, piano Sam Harris, Rick Rosato bass, drums Craig Weinrib

Dhafer Youssef is known for his penetrating way of singing, his wistful melodies, his crossover between Arabic music and jazz, and his collaborations with many other musicians in Europe.
In his music, jazz improvisation and classical Arabic music fuse. Youssef’s music is rooted in the spiritual Sufi tradition, but he has always been open to music from other directions, such as jazz, rock and electronics. But whether he works with Arabic musicians or jazz musicians or uses rock, electronica and jazz elements in his music: the melancholy of traditional sufi music and the melancholy in his voice are always there. Dhafer Youssef – old, vocals, Aaron Parks – piano, Ben Williams – bass, Justin Faulkner – drums
You’ll find a blog about Dhafer Youssef HERE

Bart Wirtz
Very recently alto saxophonist Bart Wirtz released his fourth album ‘Beneath the Surface’, an adventure crossover of energetic hip-hop and jazz with acoustic and electronic grooves. On FJIR he plays with Emiel van Rijthoven – keys, synths, sounds, Kasper Veal – bass, Niek de Bruijn – drums, percussion and Bink Beats – percussion, sounds, vibes (the alter ego Frank Wienks, also contemporary percussionist and marimba player is)
On his previous albums the jazz tradition was explicit in the music. In 2012 he won an Edison for his album ‘idreamer’. It made for a rapid in his career. On the album Interview, released in 2014, he collaborated with the American trumpeter Sean Jones. Wirtz also plays ao in the adventurous saxophone quartet Artvark.
