Alex Simu

Alex Simu speelt prachtig klarinet.

Alex Simu – klarinet/tenorsax/viola da gamba, George Dumitriu – gitaar/(alt)viool, Franz von Chossy – piano/accordeon, Jörg Brinkman – cello/basgitaar, Kristijan Krajncan – cello/drums.

ENGLISH

Alex Simu plays beautifully on the clarinet. That should be reported here first.
The clarinettist/saxophonist of Romanian origin has a beautiful warm, soft, melancholic sound and plays very beautiful pieces and solos with it.
He does this in various ensembles, including the successful Arifa, an ensemble that sheds new light on ancient music from the Middle East and the Balkans. (On this site you can find a blog about Arifa: HERE).
With his jazz quintet he directs his gaze back to the East, especially his hometown of Bucharest. Simu plays with jazz musicians from his current residence Amsterdam, which all excel in two different instruments. A pianist who grabs the accordion or a drummer who also excels in classical cello: it’s all happening in the quintet of Alex Simu.

The quintet will perform on May 11 at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam

Simu also regularly composes film soundtracks, often using electronics. With the music for “Beyond Trail ‘, based on the novel ‘Nooit Meer Slapen’ (which means Never Sleep Again) by W. F. Hermans, he won a Gouden Kalf (golden calf) at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht.
“Very special is the soundscape: the music of Alex Simu is an almost organic compound with rolling stones, buzzing mosquitoes and other, sometimes indescribable noises”, it said in NRC, about this film.
