De contrabas in de hoofdrol

Een contrabas is er niet alleen voor het ‘laag’; niet alleen om aan de onderkant van het klankspectrum een bodem te leggen en een begeleidende rol te spelen. 
Belangrijk in het klassieke orkest, maar ook als solo-instrument in kamermuziek. 
De bas is onmisbaar in een jazztrio of -kwartet! 
En stijl-overstijgend: van klassiek tot jazz,van gypsy jazz tot blue grass tot pop.
Het werd tijd voor een basfestival.

Op 20 en 21 mei 2017 is de eerste editie van het Dutch Double Bass Festival in De Electriciteitsfabriek te Den Haag (kunstpodium in Nederlands oudste energiecentrale aan de rand van de Haagse binnenstad).
Op het festival meer dan 10 (inter)nationale contrabas-acts in een breed en divers aanbod: van solobas tot ensembles/bands met bassisten als leider, klassiek; jazz en crossover komt langs; van jong talent tot wereldsterren.

Wat de jazz betreft een aantal toonaangevende bassisten uit binnen en buitenland.
Jazzbassist John Patitucci werd wereldberoemd als bassist van pianist Chick Corea; ook speelde hij in de bands van onder andere Wayne Shorter en Herbie Hancock. Op dit moment tourt hij met zijn veelgeprezen Children of the Light (met Danilo Pérez – piano, John Patitucci – bas, Brian Blade – drums) en Electric Guitar Quartet.
Voor het Dutch Double Bass Festival geeft hij een exclusief solo optreden op contrabas.


Bekroond improvisator (winnaar Buma Boy Edgarprijs 2016) Wilbert de Joode geeft twee solo concerten

Jazzbassist Ernst Glerum (ICP Orchestra e.a.) speelt met zijn Glerum Omnibus met de jonge jazzsensaties Jamie Peet (drums) en Timothy Banchet (toetsen).

De Israëlische contrabassist Adam Ben Ezra, een sensatie op Youtube met zijn contrabascovers van bekende stukken en eigen composities.

De Belgische bassist Joris Vanvinckenroye (bekend van zijn BASta solo programma) gebruikt electronica en loops in zijn aanstekelijke composities.

De Amerikaanse avant garde bassist Cody Takacs speelt nieuwe werken.

Aan de klassieke kant:
De Zuid Afrikaans James Oesi speelt de muziek van Bach solo op contrabas.
Hij is initiatiefnemer en artistiek leider van dit festival. Sinds zijn komst naar Nederland in 2009 is hij een bekend gezicht geworden in de klassieke en moderne muziek. Als één van de weinige richt hij zich op de bas als solo-instrument. Hij speelde zijn soloprogramma’s al op vele plekken en podia in nederland. Daarnaast is hij veelgevraagd als moderne muziekensemblespeler. (Asko|Schönberg, Insomnio, Oerknal, Ives Ensemble en Ensemble Modern). In mei 2012 studeerde James met een 10 met aantekening af op het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. Hij is de enige contrabassist ooit die een masters solo contrabas studeert in Den Haag.

De Amerikaan Gary Karr, de enige bassist met een internationale solocarrière, die begon in 1962 toen hij als solist speelde op tv met het New York Philharmonic onder leiding van Leonard Bernstein. Karr zal samen spelen met het Matangi Quartet.

Aanvoerder van de bassectie van het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest Dominic Seldis speelt zijn West Side Story programma.

De bassectie van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch speelt met de Venezolaanse bassist
Edicson Ruiz, de jongste bassist ooit bij het Berlin Philharmonic. 

Asko|Schönberg-bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena presenteert in een concert na jaren van ontwikkeling zijn eigen bedachte Hybrid bass: een mix tussen elektrisch en akoestische bas.

Ook de Koreaanse Minje Sung, ster in eigen land.

The bass in the lead

A bass is not only suitable for ‘the lower side of things’; not just to lay down the bottom in the sound spectrum and play a supporting role. the instrument is important in the classical orchestra, but also as a solo instrument in chamber music. And indispensable in a jazz trio or quartet! Also genre-transcending, from classical to jazz, gypsy jazz to bluegrass to pop.
It is time for a bass-festival.

On 20 and May 21, 2017, the first edition of the Dutch Double Bass Festival at the Electriciteitsfabriek in The Hague.
At the festival more then 10 (inter) national bass acts will perform in a broad and diverse line of solo bass to ensembles/bands with bass players as leader; classical, jazz and crossover genres; from young talent to world stars.

As for jazz a number of leading bass players from home and abroad will make their appearance

American avant-garde bassist Cody Takacs plays new works.
Belgian bassist Joris Vanvinckenroye (known for his solo BASta program) uses electronics and loops in his catchy compositions.
Israeli bassist Adam Ben Ezra will be there, a sensation on YouTube with his bass covers of well-known pieces and original compositions.

In the classical area :

South African James Oesi plays the music of Bach solo on bass.

He is founder and artistic director of the festival. Since his arrival in the Netherlands in 2009, he became a familiar face in classical and modern music. As one of the few he focuses on the bass as a solo instrument. He played his solo programs already in many places and venues in Netherlands. He is much in demand as a contemporary music ensemble player. (Asko | Schoenberg, Insomnio, Big Bang, Ives Ensemble and Ensemble Modern). In May 2012 James graduated with a 10 note off at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He is the only bass player ever who is studying a masters solo bass in The Hague.
The American Gary Karr is a bass player with an international solo career, which began in 1962 when he played as a soloist on TV with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein. Karr will perform with the Matangi Quartet.

Leader of the bass section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Dominic Seldis will play his West Side Story program.
The bass section of the Rotterdam Philharmonic plays with the Venezuelan bassist Edicson Ruiz, the youngest bass player ever at the Berlin Philharmonic. 
Asko|Schoenberg bass player Quirijn van Regteren Altena presents – after years of developing – his own invented Hybrid Bass: a mix of electric and acoustic bass.

Also Korean Sung Minje will perform, star in his own country.
