‘The Whammies play the music of Steve Lacy’: jazz met vrijheid

‘The Whammies play the music of Steve Lacy’: jazz and free improvisation

The legendary soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy (1934-2004) was an enthusiastic follower of free and experimental jazz, though his pieces were melodic and structured. Lacy was a big fan of the pianists Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols, with their seemingly simple melodies, angular rhythms and timing .
This week the group The Whammies plays in the Netherlands. The partly American, partly Dutch ensemble of saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra dedicates it self to the music of Steve Lacy.

Lacy’s music hit him in 1983, when he saw a performance by Lacy and drummer Han Bennink. Lacy at that time played regularly in the Amsterdam Bimhuis.  Alongside more known pieces of Lacy the Whammies also picked some obscure work from his archive. The group released two CDs with the work of Lacy on the label Driff Records. Some pieces were never recorded by Lacy himself. On the second CD there are some tracks with a Dutch perspective , including the compositions dedicated to painters Piet Mondrian and Vincent van Gogh. It also contains a few pieces of Thelonious Monk . By the way, the name The Whammies is also after a piece of Lacy.
” This is a dream band for me, with hero Han Bennink who I saw play in 1984. I studied Lacy’s scores intensly last year and we try to approach his pieces with his freshness and a lot of improvisational freedom. Expect a few gems that have probably never been recorded or performed  by Lacy”, Dijkstra says.

In 2002 Jorrit moved from Amsterdam to the USA, where he maintains strong ties with improvising musicians from Boston and Chicago. Besides alto and soprano sax he plays the electronic wind instrument Lyricon and analog electronics, and he composed for ensembles as Tetzepi , David Kweksilber Big Band and the Amstel Quartet. He is very active as a bandleader, composer and as a teacher in Boston as well as in The Netherlands. A few of his ensembles: The Flatlands Collective (with musicians from Chicago), Pillow Circles, a project for which he received a composition assignment by the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2009, in which the electric guitar plays an important role. A duo with percussionist John Hollenbeck, “zooming in” to a whole new world of sonic textures, with the help of some analog electronics. Sound-Lee, a Dutch quartet that plays the music of Lee Konitz .
