New Orleans/Black Indian roots in moderne jazz met rockinvloed

Fluisteren op de trompet kan hij, net als Miles Davis. Maar hij wordt ook de felste trompettist van zijn generatie genoemd. Nu 30 jaar – is Christian Scott al een aantal jaren geleden als een komeet omhoog geschoten in het internationale jazzcircuit.
Trompettist Christian Scott is een musicus die niet persé verlegen zit om extra publiciteit, maar zijn concert in het Bimhuis op 17 november is uitverkocht! In LantarenVenster Rotterdam speelt hij op maandag 18-11. (op dit moment nog niet uitverkocht). Hoe dan ook: toch een blog over hem en zijn quintet voor degenen, die het misschien hadden willen meemaken, maar er niet naar toe kunnen….

Zijn recente dubbelalbum heet ‘Christian aTunde Adjuah’ (zijn andere achternaam). Categorie New Orleans/Black Indian roots. Hier gaat Scott dieper in op zijn achtergrond als erfgenaam van de Mardi Gras-indianen. Invloeden van geëngageerde musici uit de jaren ‘60 en ‘70, van John Coltrane tot Jimi Hendrix, brengt hij samen met eigentijdse invloeden uit de hiphop en alternatieve rock van bijvoorbeeld Thom Yorke.
Scott vindt het niet meer dan logisch om als musicus te reageren op maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Racisme, geweld en globalisatie zijn terugkerende thema’s zijn oeuvre.
Afgelopen zomer was hij met het Next Collective te zien op North Sea Jazz, en deed hij een Miles Davis Tribute in het Concertgebouw.

Op zijn 19e bracht Christian zijn eerste album uit. Daarna volgden nog vijf platen die de aandacht trokken, vanwege zijn gepassioneerde spel maar ook vanwege zijn vernieuwende composities met invloeden van soul, rock en hiphop. Bijvoorbeeld de CD Yesterday You Said Tomorrow, waarin hij heikele thema’s als het homohuwelijk en institutioneel racisme aankaartte.
Afkomstig uit een van de belangrijkste steden van de oorsprong van jazz: New Orleans. Zoals veel jongetjes in ~New Orleans begon hij vroeg met trompetspelen – op zijn 12e jaar. Zijn oom, saxofonist Donald Harrison Jr. zag zijn talent en nam hem mee op tournee.
Later studeerde hij aan het Berklee College of Music in Boston. Hij zoog Miles Davis en John Coltrane in zich op, maar ook Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix en Mos Def. Inmiddels woont Scott in New York. En speelde met beroemde jazzartiesten en popsterren als Prince, Jill Scott en Mos Def.

He can whisper on the trumpet just like Miles Davis. But he is also called the fiercest trumpeter of his generation. Now 30 years old –  Christain Scotts star rose very quickly several years ago in the international jazzcircuit.
Trumpeter Christian Scott is a musician who’s not necessarily in need of additional publicity, but his concert at the Bimhuis on November 17 is sold out! Therefore anyway a blog about him and his quintet for those who maybe wanted to go and see him, but can not. …. In LantarenVenster Rotterdam he plays on Monday 18-11. christian scottHis recent double album is called ‘Christian aTunde Adjuah’ (his other name). Category: New Orleans/Black Indian roots. Here Scott delves deeper into his background as heir to the Mardi Gras Indians. Influences of committed musicians from the ’60s and ’70s, from John Coltrane to Jimi Hendrix, he brings togehter with contemporary influences from hip hop and alternative rock, like for example Thom Yorke. Scott finds it no more than logical to respond to social developments . Racism, violence and globalization are recurring themes in his oeuvre.
Last summer he was seen at North Sea Jazz  with his Next Collective and also he did a Miles Davis Tribute at the Concertgebouw.
On his 19th Christian released his first album. This was followed by five albums that attracted attention because of his passionate playing but also because of his innovative compositions with influences from soul, rock and hip hop. For example, the CD ‘Yesterday You Said Tomorrow’ , where he raises thorny issues like gay marriage and institutional racism.
Scott originally comes from one of the main cities of the origins of jazz: New Orleans. Like many young boys in New Orleans he began playing the trumpet early- in its 12th year. His uncle , saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. . saw his talent and took him on tour . Later he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston . Musicians like Miles Davis and John Coltraneoff course had a tremendous influense on him, but also Bob Dylan , Jimi Hendrix and Mos Def . Scott now lives in New York. He played with famous jazz artists and pop stars like Prince , Jill Scott and Mos Def .
