Spannende, krachtige vrije improvisaties en hele persoonlijke muziek
Het overgangsgebied tussen improviseren en hedendaags componeren is bij Kaja Draksler het eigenlijke grondgebied. Gefascineerd als zij is door de fameuze improviserend pianist Cecil Taylor, zijn haar improvisaties krachtig, maar op tijd ook weer subtiel. Heel spannend.
Omdat ze tegelijkertijd klassiek componiste is, klinken bij haar de gespeelde ‘jazzpiano’-noten ook heel weloverwogen. Ze voegt vrije improvisaties samen met hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek, zo lijkt het. Het resultaat is hele persoonlijke muziek, die niet makkelijk in 1 hokje te stoppen is. En dat is een welverdiende aanbeveling! Ze is een waar multitalent.
In het Bimhuis presenteert ze op 27 november 2013 haar solo-album The Lives Of Many Others, dat deze maand verschijnt op het label Clean Feed.
Aan Kaja is de EPTA Frans Schreuderprijs 2013 is toegekend, een prijs voor de maker van een werkstuk op het gebied van (leren) pianospelen. Ze krijgt deze prijs voor haar werkstuk over pianist Cecil Taylor.

‘De Sloveense pianiste Kaja Draksler is gefascineerd door de jazzpianist Cecil Taylor die een geheel eigen ‘taal’ heeft ontwikkeld, met wortels in zowel de klassieke pianotraditie als in de zwart-amerikaanse muziektraditie en in andere kunstvormen. De auteur heeft onderzocht hoe het komt dat zijn vrije improvisaties de indruk geven zeer gestructureerd te zijn en zij deed dit aan de hand van een nauwkeurige analyse van een opname van het stuk ‘Life as …. Cecil Taylor’.
De 26 jarige pianiste/componiste Kaja Draksler komt uit Slovenië, maar woont in Nederland.
Ze is zowel klassiek componist als jazz pianist. Ze won de Deloitte Jazz Award, een voormalige Nederlandse aanmoedigingsprijs voor jonge jazzmusici. De jury noemde Draksler destijds “een uitmuntend instrumentaliste met een gedegen ondergrond. Gebruik makend van ongebruikelijke maatsoorten wist ze met prikkelende ideëen de ritmesectie mee te nemen in eigen composities en bewerkingen van Chopin en Monk.’
Kaja Draksler studeerde jazzpiano in Ljubljana en Groningen. In New York kreeg ze privéles van grote muzikale vernieuwers op piano Vijay Iyer en Jason Moran. Op het Conservatorium van Amsterdam haalde ze de masteropleiding klassieke compositie.
Over de EPTA Frans Schreuderprijs: EPTA betekent European Piano Teachers Association. De Nederlandse tak hiervan reikt sinds november 2009 jaarlijks de EPTA Methodiekprijs uit. Vanaf 2013 is de prijs vernoemd naar Frans Schreuder, grondlegger en erelid van EPTA Nederland. De prijs wordt toegekend aan de schrijver (m/v) van het beste werkstuk op het vakgebied van het (leren) pianospelen in de breedste zin van het woord. De prijs gaat naar het werkstuk dat zich in meerdere opzichten onderscheidt en waarvan de inhoud een overdraagbare bijdrage levert aan de ontwikkeling van het (leren) pianospelen.

De jury is diep onder de indruk van de briljante en diepgaande manier waarop Draksler te werk is gegaan. Allereerst is het bijzonder dat het zeer complexe muziekstuk geheel op gehoor in notenschrift is omgezet. Daardoor kan ook de klassiek geschoolde lezer inzicht krijgen in de bouw van het stuk, in de bijzondere pianistiek en in het zeer persoonlijke proces van improviseren met voorbereid materiaal. Ook de analyse van het materiaal zelf is indrukwekkend en getuigt van sterk intellectueel en muzikaal inzicht.’

The transition area between improvisation and contemporary composition for Kaja Draksler is the actual territory. Fascinated as she is by the famous improvising pianist Cecil Taylor, her improvisations are powerful, but in time again subtle. Very exciting .
Because she is a classical composer as well as jazzpianist, her ‘ jazzpiano’ notes seem also very deliberate. She adds free improvisation with contemporary composed music, so it seems. The result is very personal music that is not easily labeled. And that’s a well deserved recommendation! She is a true multi-talent. Kaja won the EPTA French Schreuder Prize 2013 award, a prize for the creator of a work in the field of (learning to) play the piano . She gets the award for her essay about pianist Cecil Taylor .

” The Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler is fascinated by jazz pianist Cecil Taylor who developed his own ‘language’, with roots in both the classical piano tradition as well as in the black American music tradition and in other art forms. The author has investigated how it is that his free improvisations give the impression to be very structured and they did so on the basis of a detailed analysis of a recording of the piece ‘Life as …. Cecil Taylor’.
The 26- year-old pianist/composer Kaja Draksler comes from Slovenia, but lives in the Netherlands. She is both classical composer and jazz pianist. She won the Deloitte Jazz Award, a former Dutch incentive prize for young jazz musicians . The jury called Draksler at the time “an excellent instrumentalist with a solid surface. Using unusual time signatures she – in her own compositions and arrangements of Chopin and Monk – took the rhythm section on a tour with tantalizing ideas.
Kaja Draksler studied jazz piano in Ljubljana and Groningen. In New York she received private lessons of great musical innovators on the piano Vijay Iyer and Jason Moran. At the Conservatory of Amsterdam she she received her master’s degree classical composition .
She also performes with drummer Onno Govaert, and has a trio and a quintet (Acropolis Quintet).
About the EPTA French Schreuder Price : EPTA means European Piano Teachers Association. The Dutch branch of this organisation each year awards a price named after French Schreuder, founder and honorary member of EPTA Netherlands. The prize is awarded to the writer of the best work in the field of (learning) piano playing in the broadest sense of the word. The award goes to the part that stands out in several respects and whose content provides a transferable contribution to the development of the ( learning) to play the piano .

To discover why Taylor’s free improvisations sounded so coherent, Draksler scrutinized his recording of Life as ….
The jury was deeply impressed by the brilliant and thorough way she went to work. In particular, the jury commends the extraordinary effort she made in transcribing this very complex piece completely by ear, making it possible for the classically educated reader to gain insight into the structure of the piece with the help of music notation.
The jury was furthermore impressed by her investigation into the work’s special pianistic aspects as well as the deeply personal process it employs of improvising with pre-considered material. The analysis itself is impressive and shows strong intellectual and musical insight (…)’
