Een mooie toon, technische beheersing, rijke muzikale ideeën, verhalende soloos.
Rietblazer Joris Roelofs wordt al een paar jaar alom geprezen om deze dingen.
Met zijn trio brengt hij een dezer dagen een nieuwe CD uit: Aliens Deliberating (Pirouet records), die op zondag 2 maart wordt gepresenteerd in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. In dit trio speelt Roelofs alleen basklarinet, samen met contrabassist Matt Penmann en drummer Ted Poor.
Er zijn drie gelijkwaardige musici, die van muzikale rol kunnen wisselen: de bas speelt soms ook melodie, de drums soleert ook; de basclarinet neemt niet alleen melodieën en soli voor zijn rekening, maar vult ook harmonische begeleiding in. Er is geen accoordinstrument bij, dat de harmonieën invult. De klank van het trio is daardoor open, hetgeen zijn voordelen heeft voor de vrije benadering van de jazz.
De meeste stukken op de CD zijn van Joris Roelofs, variërend tussen jazz en free jazz. Daarnaast speelt hij een paar vrije solo-improvisaties, waarin hij alle mogelijkheden van de basclarinet laat horen, van diepe basklanken tot hoge gillers. Het titelstuk ‘Aliens Deliberating’ is zo’n solo – en de titel geeft aan wat we horen….
‘Het laat goed horen wat het instrument kan, hoe rijk en breed het klinkt, hoeveel verschillende associaties het kan oproepen’, zegt Roelofs over die solo’s. De triostukken op de cd zijn volgens hem als goede gesprekken tussen de drie musici.

Joris Roelofs laat horen dat hij schatplichtig is aan Eric Dolphy, maar ook aan Lee Konitz. Hij is heel goed thuis in snelle jazzthema’s en improvisaties. Hij heeft bovendien muzikaal gesproken opnieuw veel aan diepte gewonnen: zijn solo’s vertellen een echt verhaal en technisch gezien beheert hij het instrument van onder tot boven en terug.
De opnames werden gemaakt in januari 2013, en de CD wordt nu gereleased op het duitse label Pirouet Records. Overigens is het trio ook goed thuis is mooie klassiekers uit het amerikaanse jazzrepertoire, zoals hier te horen is in Sophisticted Lady van Duke Ellington
Pas in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw werd de basklarinet bekend in de jazzmuziek, met name door Eric Dolphy, die op basklarinet vaak interessanter klonk dan op zijn altsaxofoon.
Veel jazzmusici spelen zowel saxofoon(s) als clarinet, en de basklarinet was/is daardoor vaak het 2e instrument van een musicus (David Murray, Don Byron, Courtney Pine). Zo niet bij de fransman Louis Sclavis, voor wie de basklarinet wel het hoofdinstrument is en die er een onbetwiste meester op is.
Joris Roelofs speelt verder o.a. met Jesse van Ruller en Clemens van der Feen in het ‘Chambertones’ en met zijn eigen internationale kwartet ( zie video hieronder). Matt Penman speelde eerder met John Scofield en Madeleine Peyroux. Ted Poor begeleidde onder anderen Bill Frisell en Kurt Rosenwinkel.

There are three equivalent musicians, musical roles may change: the bass sometimes plays melody, the drums also solos, the bass clarinet will not only play melodies and solos, but also fills in harmonic accompaniment. There is no chord instrument that fills out the harmonics. The sound of the trio is therefore open, which has its advantages for the freejazz approach. Most of the pieces on the CD are by Roelofs, ranging from jazz to free jazz. He also plays a few free solo improvisations, in which he shows the different possibilities of the bass clarinet, ranging from deep bass to high yelling. The title song ‘Aliens Deliberating ‘ is such a solo – the title tells us what we hear ….
“It shows what the instrument can do, how rich and wide it sounds, how it can evoke different associations”, says Roelofs about those solo’s. The trio pieces on the CD are like concersations between the three musicians. Joris Roelofs shows us that he is indebted to Eric Dolphy, but also to Lee Konitz. He plays the fast jazz themes and improvisations very well. He gained a lot of depth, musically speaking, his solos tell a real story, and he manages the instrument technically from top to bottom and back. The recordings were made in January 2013, and the CD is now released on the German label Pirouet Records. Not untill the sixties of the last century, the clarinet became known in jazz music, notably by Eric Dolphy, who often sounded more interesting on bass clarinet than on his alto saxophone. Many reedplayers play both saxophone and clarinet; bass clarinet was/is therefore often the 2nd instrument for a musician (like David Murray, Don Byron, Courtney Pine). Except for the Frenchman Louis Sclavis , for whom the bass clarinet is the main instrument and he is an undisputed master.
