The Bad Plus is een pianotrio, dat zich zich al 14 jaar jaar niets aantrekt van jazzconventies. Van begin af aan speelden ze ook popliedjes, country- of klassieke stukken en bewerkingen van Nirvana, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Ligeti, Strawinsky en Gershwin.
Ze ontrafelden die en gaven ze in een verbeterde versie aan de wereld terug! Door die eigenwijze houding en door hun superenergieke optredens spreken deze drie Amerikanen al vele jaren een heel groot publiek aan. Reid Anderson-bas, Ethan Iverson-piano, David King-drums.
Dit voorjaar doet The Bad Plus een lange tour en speelt in Nederland op 3 april Bimhuis, Amsterdam en 5 april LantarenVenster, Rotterdam
The Bad Plus waren een van de eersten die het ‘klassieke jazz-pianotrio’ anders benaderden. Geen sprake meer van thema-solo-thema; geen dienende ritmesectie, die er vooral zit om de piano als solist te ondersteunen. Ze liepen voorop in die ontwikkeling.
Overigens schrijven ze zelf alle drie ook hele spannende stukken: energiek, soms complex, nogal eens met onregelmatige maatsoorten. En aanstekelijk! Op hun voorgaande cd Made Possible lag de nadruk op eigen composities en werden synthesizers en elektronische beats ingezet– live uitgevoerd door drummer Dave King. Seven Minute Mind (video hierboven) is er daar één van.
Hun nieuwste album is The Rite of Spring (Igor Stravinsky), het 11e album sinds 2001 en net verschenen bij Sony. Hier neemt het trio een van de meest invloedrijke werken van de 20e eeuw; een bijzonder complex stuk met experimenten in ritme en metrum, tonaliteit en dissonantie. De oorspronkelijke titel is Le Sacre du Printemps (zie onder). Dit stuk uitvoeren met slechts 3 man – het is nogal wat!
De Sacre du Printemps (Lentewijding; Rite of Spring) is een ballet van Serge Diaghilevs Ballets Russes op muziek van de Russische componist Igor Stravinsky, met een choreografie van de danser Vaslav Nijinsky en met decor- en kostuumontwerpen van de kunstenaar en archeoloog Nikolaj Rjorich. Een jonge maagd is uitverkoren om zich letterlijk dood te dansen, als offer aan de zonnegod. Het geldt als een van de meest revolutionaire werken van de 20e eeuw. De première vond plaats op 29 mei 1913. Het stuk is geschreven voor een orkest met grote bezetting.

The Bad Plus is a piano trio that is already 14 years denying jazz conventions. From the start they played pop songs, country or classical pieces and arrangements of Nirvana, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd David Bowie, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Gershwi. They unraveled them and gave them back to the world in am improved version! Because of that perky attitude and their energetic performances these three Americans appeal to a very large audience for many years now. The Bad Plus were one of the first ‘classic jazz piano trio’ that took a different approach. No longer theme- solo- theme, no serving rhythm section that mainly supports the piano soloist . They led the way in that development.
All three of them write exciting pieces for the band: energetic, sometimes complex, often with irregular time signatures. Catchy! Their previous CD Made Possible focused on original compositions and synthesizers and electronic beats – used live by drummer Dave King. Seven Minute Mind ( video above ) is one of them .
Their latest album is The Rite of Spring (Igor Stravinsky), the 11th album since 2001 and just released by Sony. Here, the trio takes one of the most influential works of the 20th century , a very complex piece with experiments in rhythm and meter, tonality and dissonance. Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring ) is a ballet of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes to music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, choreographed by the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky and set and costume designs by the artist and archaeologist Nikolai Rjorich. A young virgin is chosen to literally dance herself to death as a sacrifice to the sun god. It is one of the most revolutionary works of the 20th century. The premiere took place on May 29, 1913 . The piece is written for large orchestra.
