Jazzcore & avantrock met Indiase zang en dans
Bollycore is het nieuwe project van Spinifex, een samengaan van Nederlandse jazzcore & avantrock met traditionele lyrische Indiase zang en dans.
Een crossover in de ware betekenis van het woord.
En een must voor de liefhebbers van Indiase muziek én voor de fans van de hedendaagse jazz. Ook dans neemt dit keer een belangrijke plaats in, en daarmee wordt het visuele aspect van Bollycore erg verrijkt. Danseres is Maya Sapera, die een achtergrond heeft in Bharatanatyam (Zuid-Indiase klassieke dans), maar ook expert is in Rajasthani zigeuner dans en Bollywood stijlen. Priya Purushothaman is een Hindoestaanse zangeres uit Bangalore.
Alle partijen zijn thuis in complexe ritmes en improvisaties. De muziek bevat lange melodische lijnen, veel ritmewisselingen en kan dynamisch flink uitpakken.

Spinifex gooide al eerder hoge ogen met cross-overs tussen jazz en Zuid-Indiase (Karnatische) muziek. Samen met Indiase top-musici als violist Dr. Mysore Manjunath en Dr. Suma Sudhindra tourde het ensemble meerdere malen door India.
Spinifex is een band waar alles draait om dwingende grooves, heftige contrasten en uitdagende improvisaties. Een mix van jazzcore, metal en andere eigentijdse Westerse muziek. Maar daaronder liggen oude Turkse en Indiase ritmes. Resultaat is vaak heftige muziek, complex, wilde improvisaties. Van de luisteraar wordt concentratie gevraagd en geen angst voor volume en dynamiek.
Drijvende krachten zijn trompettist Gijs Levelt, bekend van Amsterdam Klezmer Band, en saxofonist/klarinettist Tobias Klein. Hun muziek is beïnvloed door karnatische muziek uit Azië en door typisch Westerse stromingen als progressieve metal. Hun nieuwe werk omschrijven ze zelf als ‘extremely tight irregular structures and extensive free improvising.’
Drummer en astrofysicus Philipp Moser werd bekend met de Nederlandse vooruitstrevende metalband Cilice. Gitarist Jasper Stadhouders is toonaangevend in de Amsterdamse improvisatie-underground, onder meer als lid van Cactus Truck. De Portugees-Rotterdamse bassist Gonçalo Almeida schakelt moeiteloos tussen een mooi afgeronde klank en rauwe elektrische vervorming.

Jazzcore & avantrock melt with Indian vocals and dancing
Bollycore is the new project of Spinifex, an amalgamatian of Dutch jazzcorre and avantrock with traditional lyrical singing and dancing from India. A crossover in the true sense of the word. And a must-see for lovers of Indian music and for the fans of contemporary jazz. Also dancing is very important in this project, it enriches the visual aspect of Bollycore very much. Dancer is Maya Sapera, who has a background in Bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance), but also is an expert in Rajasthani gypsy dance and Bollywood styles. Priya Purushothaman is a Hindustani singer from Bangalore. Eeverybody is familiar with complex rhythms and improvisations. In their music you find long melodic lines, many rhythm changes and dynamics.

Spinifex made a big impression before with crossovers between jazz and South Indian (Carnatic) music. Along with top Indian musicians as violinist Dr. Mysore Manjunath and Dr. Suma Sudhindra, the ensemble toured several times through India.
Spinifex is a band that is all about compelling grooves, violent contrasts and challenging improvisations. A mix of jazz core, metal and other contemporary Western music. But underneath are old Turkish and Indian rhythms. This often results in heavy music, complex, wild improvisations. Drummer and astrophysicist Philipp Moser became known with the Dutch progressive metal band Cilice. Guitarist Jasper Stadhouders is a leading figure in the Amsterdam improvisation underground, a.o. in Cactus Truck. The Portuguese-Rotterdam bassist Gonçalo Almeida effortlessly switches between a beautiful rounded tone and raw power distortion.
