EP Sentimental Mood (Favorite records) van Ernst Glerum & Uri Caine
Ernst Glerum is niet alleen bassist in talloze jazz & impro groepen (o.a. ICP, Benjamin Herman), hij speelt ook regelmatig als pianist, èn hij houdt van strijken op zijn contrabas.
Zoals hij zelf zegt: mensen noemen een bas ook wel eens ‘een grote viool’. Op de EP die hij maakte met de Amerikaanse pianist Uri Caine gebruikt Glerum zijn (overigens klein van formaat zijnde) contrabas als een grote viool: hij strijkt mooie langzame, romantische melodieën.
In songs uit het grote American Songbook wordt de viool vaak gebruikt als de muziek intiem en teder moet klinken; bij Duke Ellington liet Johnny Hodges zijn altsax eigenlijk ook klinken als een romantisch strijkinstrument.
Op de EP 5 jazzstandards, van Ellington, Jerome Kern, Harry Barris en Thelonious Monk.
De melodieën van de stukken springen er goed uit, Uri Caine voegt er zijn mooi gedoseerde piano aan toe, en zo klinkt het alles bij elkaar als mooie, persoonlijke, open en rustige jazz.
Je gaat het bijna jammer vinden dat er niet méér stukken zijn opgenomen door dit duo.
Ernst Glerum en Uri Caine zijn musici die al veel op hun naam hebben staan:
Glerum werd in de jaren 90 lid van het ICP (Instant Composers Pool Orchestra van Misha Mengelberg en Han Bennink) en maakte deel uit van groepen van o.a. pianist Guus Janssen, saxofonist Sean Bergin, Bennink/Borstlap/Glerum, Available Jelly.
In 2004 startte hij het onafhankelijke label Favorite Records, waarmee hij eigen projecten op cd en dvd uitbrengt. Hij maakte o.a. cd’s met zijn trio Glerum Omnibus – waarin hij piano speelt – en het solo-programma Glerum Ex Machina, met video en samples. In 2009 ontving hij de VPRO/Boy Edgarprijs.
Ernst Glerum speelt naast het ICP regelmatig in projecten van Benjamin Herman, Ruben Hein, en met Paul van Kemenade met zijn International Quintet met Frank Mobus en Ray Anderson.
Bennink/Borstlap/Glerum
Uri Caine is pianist en componist en zowel in de klassieke muziek als in de jazzmuziek werkzaam. Hij staat bekend om zijn eigenzinnige en inventieve interpretaties van klassieke werken (Mahler, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner).
Hij speelde moderne jazz met o.a. Don Byron en trompettist Dave Douglas, Pat Martino, Christian McBride, het Masada String trio en met zijn eigen bands.

Melodic, open and personal
Ernst Glerum is not only bassist in numerous jazz and improv groups (ao ICP, Benjamin Herman), he also regularly plays as a pianist, and he likes bowing his bass.
The bass is sometimes called ‘a big violin’. On the EP Glerum made with the American pianist Uri Caine he uses his (small in size being) bass as a violin: playing slow bowed romantic melodies. Insongs from the Great American Songbook the violin is often used when the music should sound intimate and tender; Duke Ellington’s alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges made his instrument often sound like a romantic string instrument.
On the EP five jazz standards from Ellington, Jerome Kern, Harry Barris and Thelonious Monk.
The melodies of the pieces jump out, Uri Caine adds his beautiful dosed piano to it, and all together it becomes beautiful, personal, open and smooth jazz. Allmost sorry to see that this duo didn’t cover more compositions.

He played modern jazz with ao Don Byron and trumpeter Dave Douglas, Pat Martino, Christian McBride, the Masada String Trio and with his own bands.
