De Armeense pianist Tigran Hamasyan houdt van liedjes die geïnspireerd zijn op de traditionele Armeense volksmuziek. Hij speelt een mix van folk, jazz en pop. Zijn nieuwste project heet Entertain Me. Een meer op jazz georiënteerde plaat waar hij momenteel met zijn trio aan werkt. Tigran Hamasyan won in 2006 de Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition.

Het Zwitserse pianotrio Plaistow speelt een mix van minimal music en elektronica. Lange nummers met een inventieve opbouw. De band wordt vaak in één adem genoemd met componisten en musici als Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Rabih Abou-Khalil en Squarepusher. Plaistow is een honderd procent akoestische band, sinds de komst van contrabassist Vincent Ruiz in 2012. Het Belgische pianotrio De Beren Gieren hadden afgelopen zomer veel succes op het Northsea Jazz Festival met hun energieke, aanstekelijke innovatieve jazz. De composities van pianist en bandleider Fulco Ottervanger dragen titels als Knalsonate of Koekjes ‘s Nachts, die nieuwsgierig maken en later – bij het beluisteren – onrust veroorzaken. Soms is het vertrekpunt van de stukken een eenvoudig thema, dan weer de totale chaos. Maar de nummers monden altijd in volwassen jazzimprovisaties die verrassen en ontroeren,ook met humor.

Het nieuwe jazzcollectief Batik laat zich inspireren door het werk van de internationaal gerenommeerde vilt-kunstenares Claudy Jongstra: de musici maken een muzikale reis op zoek naar versmelting van klank. In juni dit jaar presenteerde de band zijn eerste cd Headland waarop impressionistische composities te vinden zijn.

20:00 | Ben van Gelder Quartet met Ambrose Akinmusire
Al vanaf zijn 18e reist altsaxofonist Ben van Gelder tussen Nederland en zijn huidige woonplaats New York. Hij kreeg er les van zijn voorbeelden Lee Konitz en Mark Turner, en net als zijn pianospelende broer Gideon vormde hij er zijn eigen band.
Heel speciaal is dat Ben van Gelder optreedt Ambrose Akinmusire, dé trompettist van het jaar volgens toonaangevende internationale media, die afgelopen zomer ook de Paul Ackett Award kreeg op het Northsea Jazz Festival. Met zijn debuutalbum Frame of Reference bewees Van Gelder zowel zijn virtuositeit op zijn instrument als zijn componeertalent. Die plaat en ook zijn 2e album ‘Reprise’ werden aangeprezen als één van de mooiste Nederlandse jazzalbums van de afgelopen jaren. 20:45 | The Pack Project met Mark Schilders
The Pack Project is een jaarlijks terugkerend project van Jazz International Rotterdam. Jonggetalenteerde jazzmuzikanten krijgen tijdens het festival de gelegenheid zich te presenteren met hun ‘Pack’, een exclusieve band die door een bandleider samen met de artistieke leiding van Jazz International wordt samengesteld.
Dit jaar is het de beurt aan drummer Mark Schilders. Hij won in 2011 de Erasmus Jazz Prijs en is een veelgevraagd musicus in Nederland en ver daarbuiten. Zijn speelterrein is vooral zijn woonplaats New York, maar hij treedt ook in Nederland veelvuldig op als vast lid van bands als New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra en Reinier Baas.

Drummers Stefan Kruger en Joost Patocka richtten dit jaar een nieuwe band op met de titel Krupa & the Genes. KRUPA is een acroniem van de namen van de twee drummers. Het nieuwe septet heeft twee drummers, twee gitaristen, twee saxofonisten en een contrabassist. De band claimt muziek te spelen die allerlei kanten op kan gaan. Van Nu-jazz, free jazz, afro-jungle en funk tot soul, r&b en zelfs klassiek.Extra: presentatie van een gloednieuw album van het septet + special guest zangers Minyeshu. De 3 musici van Phronesis – oprichter Jasper Høiby op contrabas, Ivo Neame op piano en Anton Eger op drums – produceren energieke ritmes en groovy thema’s, vaak aangevoerd door de duizelingwekkend snel spelende bas. De melodische pianolijnen van Ivo Neame maken de muziek toegankelijk, de complexe ritmiek van Anton Eger laat het repertoire van Phronesis staan als een huis. “Een van de spannendste bands ter wereld”, schreef het Engelse magazine Jazzwise. Sinds de oprichting in 2005 is het hard gegaan:vijf bejubelde albums, tournees door Australië, Noord-Amerika en heel Europa en een pers die vol lof schrijft het trio.

In februari 2014 presenteerde drummer Felix Schlarmann zijn eerste eigen cd getiteld Counterlife. Schlarmann is in de Nederlandse jazzscene vooral bekend als drummer van groovejazzkwartet BRUUT! en als programmeur van Jazzfest Amsterdam.
De afgelopen jaren heeft hij zich ook op zijn kwaliteiten als bandleider en componist gericht. Het resultaat is muziek die wordt gekenmerkt door sierlijke melodieën en energieke uitbarstingen.

Bassist Avishai Cohen is eigengereid. In alle opzichten is zijn benadering van de bas origineel en virtuoos en hij swingt. Cohen is een wereldburger die zijn muziek laat weerklinken in genres als latin, klassieke muziek, balkan en volksmuziek uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika en natuurlijk klezmer en jazz. Zingen doet hij in het Engels, Hebreeuws, Spaans en het Ladino.
Cohen werd in 1996 ontdekt door pianist Chick Corea, met wie hij in meerdere bands samenspeelde zoals het sextet Origin en het Chick Corea New Trio. Sinds zijn vertrek bij Chick Corea maakte Cohen met zijn eigen bands tal van albums. Zijn laatste getiteld Almah gaat terug naar Avishai Cohens liefde voor de kamermuziek.

JOHN SCOFIELD TRIO, FEAT. STEVE SWALLOW & BILL STEWART
Scofields gitaarspel beïnvloedt al vanaf eind jaren zeventig de jazz wereldwijd. Hij is de meest populaire jazzgitarist aller tijden. En nu nog wordt John Scofield gezien als belangrijke vernieuwer van het genre. Zijn onderscheidende geluid, grote verscheidenheid in stijl en meesterlijke manier van improviseren maakt hem tot een unieke speler in het veld. De muziek van Scofield is jazz, lay back funky en ook altijd enigszins bluesy. Wat (en met wie) hij ook speelt: Scofield is altijd te herkennen.

From his 18th alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder travels between the Netherlands and New York. Lee Konitz and Mark Turner, were his teachers and like his piano playing brother Gideon, he formed his own band. Ben van Gelder brings with him special guest Ambrose Akinmusire, acclaimed trumpet player of the year by leading international media, who last summer also received the Paul Ackett Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival. The Pack Project is an annual project of Jazz International Rotterdam. Young talented jazz musicians during the festival get the opportunity to present themselves with their ‘Pack’, an exclusive band. Drummer Mark Painters won ithe Erasmus Jazz Prize n 2011 and is a much sought after musician in the Netherlands and abroad. His playground is especially his hometown of New York, but he also performs frequently in the Netherlands as a regular member of bands like New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra and Reinier Baas. For his Pack he asked three jazz musicians: guitarist Jesse van Ruller, bassist Clemens van der Feen and Belgian pianist Bram De Looze.

Trio Phronesis – founded by Jasper Høiby on bass, Ivo Neame on piano and Anton Eger on drums – produces energetic groovy rhythms and themes, often led by the dizzyingly fast playing bass. Ivo Neame ‘s melodic piano lines make the music accessible, the complex rhythms of Anton Eger gives the repertoire of Phronesis a powerful base. “One of the most exciting bands in the world,” the English magazine Jazzwise wrote. Since its founding in 2005, the trio made five critically acclaimed albums, toured through Australia, North America and Europe, and gained a lot of praise in the media.

Drummer Felix Schlarmann presented his first CD in February 2014 entitled Counterlife.
Schlarmann is best known in the Dutch jazz scene as the drummer of groove jazz quartet BRUUT! and as a programmer of Jazz Fest Amsterdam. In recent years he has also focused on his skills as a bandleader and composer. The result is music that is characterized by graceful melodies and energetic outbursts. Bassist Avishai Cohen is headstrong. In all respects, his approach to the bass is original and virtuoso and he can make it swing. Cohen is a citizen of the world that incorporates genres like Latin, classical music, folk music from the Balkans and Middle East and North Africa, and of course, klezmer and jazz. Also he sings in English, Hebrew, Spanish and Ladino. Cohen was discovered in 1996 by pianist Chick Corea, with whom he played in several bands such as the sextet Origin and the Chick Corea New Trio. Since his departure from Chick Corea Cohen made numerous albums with his own bands. The last one is entitled ‘Almah’, and here Cohen goes back to his love for chamber music. Even now John Scofield is seen as a major innovator of the genre. His distinctive sound, wide variety in style and masterful way of improvising makes him a unique player in the field. Scofield’s music is jazz, lay back funky and always slightly bluesy. Whatever (and with who ever) he plays: Scofield is always recognizable as himself.
