Een dubbelblog over twee CD’s (nog uit 2014), die met elkaar gemeen hebben, dat er mooie sfeervolle & melancholieke muziek op te horen is.

In 2012 richtte de Belgische gitarist Ruben Machtelinckx met landgenoten Joachim Badenhorst en Nathan Wouters en de IJslandse gitarist Hilmar Jensson zijn eigen kwartet op. ‘Flock’ is hun 2e album, opvolger van ‘Faerge’, dat in 2012 verscheen.
Twee gitaristen dus (Ruben Machtelinckx speelt ook baritongitaar), klarinetten en contrabas. Deze ongebruikelijke bezetting (zonder slagwerk) zorgt voor een typische, bijna rustgevende sound. Net als op de eerste CD zijn er sterke melodieën, sfeervolle, warme, poëtische geluiden en is er vaak een melancholische ondertoon. Slechts zo nu en dan wordt er een soort plaagstootje uitgedeeld met een wat hardere galm-gitaar.
De nadruk ligt op het totaal-geluid en de homogeniteit van de muziek; de musici denken en spelen meer als componisten dan als solo-instrumentalist. Mooi!
CD A Pasha’s Abstinence, van Sebastian Spanache Trio
Sebastian Spanache Trio is koploper van de nieuwe generatie jonge Roemeense jazzmusici. De drie komen met een nieuwe kijk op Oost-europese onregelmatige maatsoorten-muziek op basis van improvisatie, soms met een melancholische ondertoon. Het trio werd opgericht in 2011 in Timisoara, Roemenië. Dit is hun tweede album getiteld ‘A Pasha’s Abstinence (label Fiver House Records), uitgebracht in 2014. De cd bevat 8 originele composities waarin op subtiele wijze elementen uit traditionele Ottomaanse muziek zitten (- een cultuur die alle Roemeense muziek en de Roemeense cultuur als geheel sterk heeft beïnvloed -).
Die vinden hun weg in de complexe composities en improvisaties van het trio. Het geheel klinkt heel organisch. Gastspelers op de cd zijn Joanna Kucharczyk (zang), Alex Simu (sopraan klarinet), George Dumitriu (gitaar) en Berti Barbera (percussie). In het titelnummer van het album speelt ook een strijkkwartet mee.
Sebastian Spanache is een van de leiders van de nieuwe generatie up-and-coming jazz pianisten en componisten in de Roemeense muziek scene. Hij schoof op van klassieke muziek naar jazz, Latin Jazz en funk. Hij schrijft ook muziek voor films en videogames en won prijzen op internationale muziekcompetities. Ook kreeg hij goede recensies in prestigieuze tijdschriften als DownBeat en opwebsites zoals Gamespot.com, deviantART en JayisGames.

In 2012, the Belgian guitarist Ruben Machtelinckx started his own quartet together with compatriots Joachim Badenhorst and Nathan Wouters and Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson. ‘Flock ‘is their 2nd album, successor of’ Faerge ‘, which appeared in 2012.
So the music is played by two guitarists (Ruben Machtelinckx on baritone guitar as well!)reeds and double bass. These atypical cast (without drums) produces a distinctive and soothing sound.
Again on this second album we can hear strong melodies, atmospheric, warm, poetic sounds and there is often a melancholy undertone. Only occasionally a bit of teasing is handed out with a somewhat loud reverb guitar. The emphasis is on the overall sound and the homogeneity of the music; the musicians think and play more as composers than as a solo instrumentalist. Beautiful

Sebastian Spanache Trio is at the leading edge of the new generation of young romanian jazz musicians. The three form a group with a new take on modern odd-meter song-based improvisation, with sometimes a melancholic undertone.

The trio was founded in 2011 in Timisoara, Romania. This is their second album titled ‘A PASHA’S ABSTINENCE’ (label Fiver House Records), released in 2014. The CD features 8 original compositions which introduce subtle ottoman traditional music elements – a culture that has greatly influenced romanian music and romanian culture as a whole – in the trio’s critically acclaimed song-based improvisation, intricate compositions and organic interplay.
Guestplayers on the CD are Joanna Kucharczyk (vocal), Alex Simu (soprano clarinet), George Dumitriu (guitar) and Berti Barbera (percussion). The title track of the album also features a string quartet.
Sebastian Spanache is one of the leaders of the next generation of up-and-coming jazz pianists and composers on the Romanian music scene.
He shifted from classical playing and composing towards a more modern edge with Latin Jazz and funk projects and gigs.
He also writes music for motion pictures and video games and has won prizes from international music contests and reviews in prestigious magazines such as DownBeat and websites such as Gamespot.com, deviantART and JayisGames.
