Odd-meter electric freefunk-jazz van het hoogste niveau
Grooven in 7-kwarts, of in 11-achtsten is geen enkel probleem voor electric freefunk-jazzkwartet Underground van saxofonist Chris Potter.
Eind deze maand terug in Nederland: 26-2 Bimhuis Amsterdam, 28-2 LantarenVenster Rotterdam. Chris Potter – tenorsax, Adam Rogers – gitaar, Fima Ephron – bas, Nate Smith – drums.
Begin 2015 verscheen het nieuwe album Imaginary Cities op het label ECM. Hier is het kwartet uitgebreid tot een Underground Orchestra, met strijkkwartet, een 2e bassist (Scott Colley), Steve Nelson op vibes en Craig Taborn op piano.
“There’s almost nothing he cannot accomplish on the saxophone’, schrijft het gezaghebbende tijdschrift Downbeat, waarin Potter onlangs werd uitgeroepen tot beste saxofonist van het jaar en daarmee in de eregalerij kwam naast Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman en Joe Lovano.
Hier een goeie documentaire, die een inkijkje geeft in de manier waarop de muziek in Underground tot stand komt. Met veeeel muziek!
Onvermoeibaar als altijd speelde Underground op 2-10-2013 ook in het Bimhuis. Een concert waarin drummer Nate Smith de Hardste-Klappen-van-het-Noordelijk-Halfrond gaf op de Snare. Concerten van Potter zijn altijd heel intens: stukken met een lange opbouw, veel energie, en uitgerekte soloos.
De lange tenorsax-soloos hadden zoals gebruikelijk een spectaculaire opbouw: vaak beginnend met weinig noten – ritmisch, met veel rust ertussen – opbouwend naar meer, hoger en harder. Maar als Potter op het hoogtepunt is, en de solo bijna ten einde lijkt, komen er nog wat schepjes bovenop. Ook doordat de rest van de band mee opbouwt, met steeds intenser drumwerk van Nate Smith, die fabelachtige, ingewikkelde ritmes superstrak neerzet.
Ook gitarist Adam Rogers soleerde in lange lijnen over de ritmes heen. Bassist Fima Ephron zorgde voor standvastige, degelijke ondergrond. Wel moet het me van het hart, dat ik soms Craig Taborn mis – die in het verleden Fender Rhodes speelde in dit kwartet, en ook de basfunktie op zich nam.
Chris Potter heeft een supertechniek en enorme creativiteit en inventiviteit en wordt terecht gerekend tot de meest toonaangevende saxofonisten van zijn generatie. Een rolmodel voor jonge saxofonisten: zijn soloos worden uitgezocht en bestudeerd. Hij maakte naam in de bands van Dave Holland en Dave Douglas en ging op tournee met Steely Dan. En speelde verder o.a. met Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas en Ray Brown. Hij werd gevormd door grote tenoristen als Lester Young en Sonny Rollins.

A concert in which drummer Nate Smith gave the Loudest–Hits–of-the-Northern–Hemisphere on the snaredrum.Concerts of Potter are always very intense: long pieces with a lot of energy and stretched soloos.
The Potter tenor-soloos often start with few notes – rhythmically, with rests in between – building up to more, higher and louder. But if Potter is at the peak, and the solo seems almost over, there will be some scoops on top. Also because the rest of the band builds along with increasingly intense drumming of Nate Smith, fabulous intricate rhythms super tight drop.
Also guitarist Adam Rogers plays long lines on the rhythms around. Bassist Fima Ephron played steady & solid.
However, I have to say that sometimes I miss Craig Taborn – who played the Fender Rhodes in this quartet in the past, acting as a bass at the same time.
Chris Potter has a super technique and enormous creativity and inventiveness and is rightly counted among the leading saxophonists of his generation. A role model for young saxophonists. He made his name in the bands of Dave Holland and Dave Douglas and toured with Steely Dan. Also he played a.o. with Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas and Ray Brown. He was formed by large tenorists as Lester Young and Sonny Rollins.
