1 Track Only (9)

In ‘Come Round’ horen we zanger Ruben Hein.

ENGLISH

Three recent CD releases: jazz with rock and electronics by the Jasper Blom Quartet; abstract, but sensitive sound poetry of Jozef Dumoulin Red Hill Orchestra and flamenco jazz pianist Miguel Rodriguez. As usual, I didn’t succeed in leaving it at one track only…

Audacity (Mainland records) of the Jasper Blom Quartet
“Audacity” is the fourth album by the Jasper Blom Quartet, which still consists of the same four internationally renowned Dutch jazz musicians playing together for over 20 years.
Jasper Blom – saxophones, electronics, Jesse van Ruller – guitars, Frans van der Hoeven – bass and Martijn Vink – drums.
The compositions of Jasper Blom as always are thoughtful and accessible. His tenor saxophone sound is remarkable – it’s often distorted by electronic effects. The music is an amalgam of jazz, rock, electronica, oriental influences, blues, bossa nova. There are two vocal pieces on the album. In ‘Circulaçao’ Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira (Zuco 103) raps about the traffic congestion in Rio de Janeiro. In ‘Come Round’ we hear singer Ruben Hein.
5-3 Mahogany Hall Edam, 12-3 Cologne Studio 672, 21-3 Artishock Soest, 24-3 Jazz in Duketown Den Bosch.

Jasper-Bloms-Quartet-featJasper Blom Quartet previously worked with the Italian trumpeter Marco Tamburini and the American alto saxophonist Dick Oatts and will play a number of times next season with the famous Belgian trumpeter Bert Joris.
Jasper Blom (1965) is considered one of the most important saxophonists and most versatile musicians of the Benelux. Blom has twice won the European Jazz Competition, completed his studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory with honors and went to New York to continue studying there and play. Blom has developed into a much sought after sideman in pop, jazz and improvised music and has played in many formations including with Randy Crawford and George Duke, Michiel Borstlap and Trijntje Oosterhuis, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Nat Adderley.
With alto and clarinet player Joris Roelofs he co-leads Ensemble a l’Improviste dedicated to the music of Claude Debussy. Furthermore he plays as a sideman in many groups including Krupa and the Genes, Identikit of guitarist Mario Scholten and David Kweksilber Big Band. As a composer he received composition assignments from the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Festival Jazz International Rotterdam and SAX14 festival. He is major teacher jazz saxophone at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Trust Jozef Dumoulin & Red Hill Orchestra
Abstract, but sensitive sound poetry
Keyboard player Jozef Dumoulin (Belgian, living in Paris) was previously described as “piano wizard”, “keyboard magician” and “Fender Rhodes specialist in the press. He creates a unique sound on Fender Rhodes, which he often combines with electronics. He made a FR-solo album last year. Together with American drummer Dan Weiss and saxophonist Ellery Eskelin he formes  the Red Hill Orchestra, and released the CD Trust in the autumn of 2014. After his extensive experiments with Fender Rhodes solo Dumoulin wanted to play with others again. Eskelin and Weiss both have their roots in the American jazz tradition, but are very convinced free improvisers.

I’d like to quote journalist Koen van Meel, who wrote about this: “… drummer Dan Weiss and saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, musicians who can be called great personalities and are averse to fashions and trends, have developed their own style.

That is great, because Dumoulin is also one of those who is not following the most obvious paths. The abstract and often very flouring sounding sound he mastered to perfection, are not welcome on daytime radio. That doesn’t stop Dumoulin from developing it and it succeeds with his new trio remarkably well”.He also wrote:”Not ascetic, but perfectly timed, both in terms of sound, rhythm and dynamics, the musicians occasionally flirt with groove, never really letting it break through. Either Weiss pulls back the tempo a little bit, or Dumoulin crumbles fixed rhythms, letting the music keep its shadowy character and thus keep her secret identity. “(October 2014 in the sadly abolished online Flemish jazz magazine Quadrature)
CD ContraSentido (dox records) Miguel Rodríguez
Jazz & improvisation meet flamenco & latin
Following its debut in 2013, the Spanish pianist Miguel Rodríguez now comes with a second album: ContraSentido. The group has remained the same and yet the 2nd album sounds different. The first CD contains more instrumental pieces; on ContraSentido there is a large role for the flamenco singing of María Marín. The whole still contains Miguels recognizable mix of jazz, Cuban bolero, traditional Spanish melodies and improvisation.

miguel rodriguezMiguel Rodríguez is jazz pianist, but also flamenco pianist – one of the few. With his quintet, he has developed his own style: jazz and improvisation meet flamencoand latin in a personal and original way. Spanish roots can be heard in his music clearly. Madrid is a multicultural city full of different kinds of music and that affects his compositions. Miguel Rodríguez was born there and his quintet consists partly of Spanish musicians who are based in the Netherlands. The band began as a trio with bassist Luciano Poli and drummer Francesco de Rubeis. Flamenco singer Maria Marin and percussionist Miguel Hiroshi joined them later on.
He himself once said: “I have four reasons why I want to make this project a success: I play piano, I play my own music, I play music from my homeland, I play jazz. ”
After studying at the Rotterdam and Amsterdam Conservatory Miguel Rodríguez decided to stay in the Netherlands. He is also a pianist at the Benjamin Herman Quartet, Ben van den Dungen quartet and Maarten Hogenhuis quartet.
