Drie spannende nieuwe releases van jonge jazzmusici, die flink aan de weg timmeren: Stephanie Francke; K trio en Itai Weissman
CD Vindstig , van K trio
Het internationale K trio maakt levendige nieuwe jazz met speelse, aparte ritmes, onverwachte twists en veel speelplezier. Dat doet het trio al sinds 2008, toen pianist Kristján Martinsson het oprichtte om te slagen voor zijn eindexamen aan de ‘Icelandic Musicians Union School of Music’. Kristjan Martinsson komt dus uit IJsland, bassist Pat Cleaver uit Engeland/Frankrijk en drummer Andris Buikis uit Letland, maar ze wonen alle drie in Amsterdam.
Nu is er het 4e album Vindstig, een suite in 13 (korte) delen, gebaseerd op de vele IJslandse woorden die er bestaan voor het begrip ‘wind’. (zie ook de video, waarin dit wordt toegelicht). Visual artist Helga Paley maakte er tekeningen bij die niet alleen het artwork vormen voor de hoes, maar ook op de achtergrond worden geprojecteerd bij live optredens.
De bandleden spelen overigens naast hun 1e instrument ook nog blaasinstrumenten (bv Pat Cleaver – trombone). De CD wordt gepresenteerd op 1 Juni 2015 in het Betanienklooster in Amsterdam
K trio – genoemd naar de voorletter K van pianist Kristján? – won de eerste prijs tijdens de ‘Young Nordic Jazz Comets’ in Kopenhagen. Hun 3e album ‘Meatball Evening’ won de Icelandic Music Award.

Indie jazzrock op EWI
De EWI is het electronisch blaasinstrument van AKAI, dat in de jaren 80 enige tijd bekend werd omdat saxofonist Michael Brecker het gebruikte. Niet erg veel saxofonisten hebben dat nagevolgd. Wel Itai Weissman, die nu met zijn band Trimary een EP maakte waarop de EWI prachtig klinkt en goed tot zijn recht komt. De muziek neigt soms meer naar rock, soms wat meer naar jazz: fusion kortom!

Meestal werd de EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) gebruikt in jazzrock en fusion, later ook wel in New Age muziek. Karakteristiek is vooral de mogelijkheid om allerlei geluidseffecten aan de klank toe te voegen of het instrument meerstemmig te laten klinken.
Het heeft een behoorlijke dynamiek (van heel zacht tot behoorlijk hard), maar dat hangt mede af van de synthesizer software waarmee het verbonden is. De EWI kan een groot bereik hebben (van heel laag tot heel hoog): 8 oktaven.
Itai Weissman komt uit Israel. Op zijn 10e begon hij met saxofoon. Tien jaar later ging hij studeren aan de Jerusalem Music Academy. Tegelijkertijd was hij ook behoorlijk actief in de muziek scene van Tel-Aviv waar hij met verschillende projecten speelde, als leider en sideman. In 2006 vertrok Weissmann naar Amsterdam om daar verder te studeren aan het conservatorium. Hij kreeg onder meer les van Branford Marsalis, Dick Oatts, Jasper Blom, Ferdinand Povel en Eric Alexander. Hij was te zien op verschillende festivals w.o. North Sea Jazz. In 2009 won hij met zijn groep WEISZ de prijs voor de Beste Groep bij de Keep An Eye Jazz Award. In 2010 bracht hij zijn debuut-cd “From Father To Son” uit.

Alt- en sopraansaxofoniste Stephanie Francke bracht met haar quartet een 2e album uit: ‘Ripples’.
Lyrische jazz, melodieus en harmonisch, af en toe een beetje abstract. Francke heeft een warm geluid en qua speelstijl lijkt het er regelmatig op dat zij Tineke Postma achterna wil gaan. 🙂
Er wordt goed en genuanceerd samengespeeld door het quartet, waarin Guus Bakker – bas, Koen Schalkwijk – piano, Niek de Bruijn – drums en zangeres Elizabeth Simonian doet mee als gastmusicus.

Zelf heeft ze over haar muziek gezegd: “Een stuk moet in essentie voldoende eigen zeggingskracht hebben; de solo is daar een aanvulling of toelichting op. Liever dat, dan andersom. Ik hoef niet in elk nummer een lange solo.”
Francke studeerde in 2012 af aan het Conservatorium van Rotterdam en timmerde sindsdien flink aan de weg.
Tijdens Festival Jazz International Rotterdam 2013 presenteerde zij ‘The Nine’; het resultaat van ‘The Pack Project’, een jaarlijks terugkerend project waarin jonge getalenteerde jazzmuzikanten de gelegenheid krijgen zich te presenteren met hun ‘Pack’. Bij het samenstellen hoort een extra eis: zoek muzikanten buiten je eigen comfortzone.De negen musici (een triple-trio; drie strijkers, drie blazers en piano trio) hadden een totaal verschillende achtergrond: jazz, klassieke muziek, progressieve rock en hedendaagse muziek.
Ze stond in de finale van de European Jazz Competition en won de Erasmus Jazz Prijs. In 2013 verscheen haar debuut album Florigen. Met het Nationaal Jeugd Jazz orkest olv Benjamin Herman deed ze een tour tijdens de zomer van 2011 en ook speelde ze in de Codarts bigband onder leiding van Ilja Reijngoud.

Three new releases of young jazz musicians, seriously breaking new grounds: Stephanie Francke; K trio and Itai Weissman
CD Vindstig, K trio
The international K trio makes vibrant new jazz with playful rhythms, unexpected twists and a having fun doing so. It has been doing so since 2008 when pianist Kristján Martinsson founded it in order to pass his final exams at the “Icelandic Musicians Union School of Music.
Kristjan Martinsson comes from Iceland, bassist Pat Cleaver from England/France and drummer Andris Buikis from Latvia, but they all live in Amsterdam.
Their 4th album Vindstig was released, a suite in 13 (short) parts, based on the many Icelandic words that exist for the concept of ‘wind’. (Watch the video where this is explained). Visual artist Helga Paley made drawings: the artwork for the cover, but also projected in the background at live performances.
The band members also incidentally play a wind instrument (f.i. Pat Cleaver – trombone). The CD will be presented on 1 June 2015, in the Betanienklooster in Amsterdam

The EWI is the electronic wind instrument, that became known for some time in the 80s when saxophonist Michael Brecker used it. Not very many saxophonists did the same. However Itai Weissman now made an EP with his band Trimary where the EWI sounds wonderful and comes to its full advantsage. The music sometimes tends toward rock, sometimes more toward jazz, in short: it’s fusion!

Usually, the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) was used in jazz rock and fusion, later also in New Age music. Characteristic for the instrument is the ability to add all kinds of soundeffects to the sound and also to make it sound polyphonic.
It has a quite large range of dynamics (from very soft to quite loud), but that also depends on the synthesizer software with which it is connected. The EWI can have a wide range (from very low to very high) of 8 octaves.
Itai Weissman comes from Israel. On his 10th he started playing saxophone. Ten years later he went to study at the Jerusalem Music Academy. Alto and soprano saxophonist Stephanie Francke released her 2nd album “Ripples”.
Lyrical jazz, melodic and harmonious, sometimes a little abstract. Francke has a warm sound and in terms of playing style it seems she likes to follow in the footsteps of Tineke Postma. 🙂
The quartet plays together strongly and nuanced. Stephanie Francke – alto & sopranosax, Guus Bakker – bass, Koen Schalkwijk – piano, Niek de Bruijn – drums and singer Elizabeth Simonian participates as guest musician.
On May 23 they will play at Jazz Festival Middelburg.
She herself has said about her music: “A piece must essentially have its own power of expression; a solo is more like a supplement or elaboration. I’d rather have it that way than vice versa. I don’t need a long solo in every song. “
Francke graduated in 2012 from the Conservatory of Rotterdam and is breaking new grounds since then. At Festival Jazz International Rotterdam in 2013 she presented ‘The Nine’; the result of The Pack Project, an annual project in which talented young jazz musicians have the opportunity to present their ‘Pack’. And there is an additional requirement: to find musicians outside your own comfortzone. The nine musicians (a triple trio, three strings, three horns and piano trio) had a very different background: jazz, classical music, progressive rock and contemporary music.
Francke was finalist in the European Jazz Competition and she won the Erasmus Jazz Prize. In 2013 she released her debut album Florigen. With the National Youth Jazz Orchestra led by Benjamin Herman she did a tour during the summer of 2011 and also she played in the Codarts Big Band conducted by Ilja Reijngoud.
