Hermine Deurloo is nóg beter gaan spelen de laatste jaren: de ene mooie melodische solo na de andere: het klinkt allemaal erg goed! Haar precieze notenkeus is prachtig.
Zapp4 bewijst zich eens te meer als een zeer geavanceerd strijkkwartet; in staat om in alle muzikale situaties zowel verfijning als energie en opwinding aan te brengen.
De CD Welling al ontving zeer positieve reviews – en terecht.
De harmonica is nog steeds niet erg gangbaar in de jazz, en een combinatie met strijkkwartet is sowieso uniek. Hermine Deurloo werkt er gestaag aan om steeds meer terrein te winnen voor de mondharmonica in de jazz. Ze nodigde Zapp4 uit tot het samen maken van een cd. Vernoemd naar café Welling vlak achter het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, waar soms ook live jazz wordt gespeeld. De kamerjazz die Deurloo en Zapp4 brengen is melodisch, licht, elegant, transparant, en natuurlijk een beetje melancholisch, zoals dat snel het geval is met het geluid van de mondharmonica.
Ook in deze combinatie met Deurloo zorgen de vier musici van Zapp4 voor zowel begeleiding als ritme, melodie en improvisatie, van fluisterzacht tot rauw en luid. Bovendien staan er 5 composities op de cd van leden van Zapp4: van Oene van Geel, Jeffrey Bruinsma en Jasper Le Clercq, naast stukken van Deurloo, Rembrandt Frerichs, Jaco Pastorius en Ali Farka Touré. Het repertoire is speciaal gearrangeerd voor dit ensemble en zit vol groove, improvisatie en interactie.

Hermine Deurloo begon op altsaxofoon, maar na haar studie aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam leerde ze zichzelf chromatische mondharmonica spelen. Geïnspireerd door Toots Thielemans (zo nu en dan wordt gezegd dat zij de ‘nieuwe Toots’ is), ontwikkelde ze een intiem en lyrisch geluid. Naast haar samenwerking met Zapp4, leidt ze haar eigen kwartet (met oa gitarist Jesse van Ruller) en een duo met pianist Rembrandt Frerichs. Ze is een veelgevraagd sidewoman en gastsolist en toerde ze over de hele wereld met musici als gitarist Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones), het Metropole Orkest, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker Kollektief, het Schönberg Ensemble, Candy Dulfer en nog veel meer.

Hermine Deurloo has really progressed in her playing these last few years: one beautiful melodic solo after another: it all sounds great! Her exact choice of which notes to play is really superb.
Zapp4 proves itself once more a very sophisticated string quartet, able to apply refinement next to energy and excitement in all musical situations.
The CD Welling already recieved very positive reviews – and rightly so.
The harmonica is still not very much established in the world of jazz, and it’s even more unique in combination with a string quartet.
Hermine Deurloo is steadily gaining more and more ground for the harmonica in jazz. And so she invited Zapp4 to join her on her latest CD. Named after café/bar Welling right behind the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, being a venue for live jazz as well.

The chamberjazz created by Deurloo and Zapp4 is light, elegant, transparent, and of course a little melancholic, as goes with the sound of the harmonica.
Also in this conjunction with Deurloo the Zapp4 musicians take care of accompaniment, rythm, melody and improvisation, from whispering soft to raw and loud. Moreover 5 compositions on the CD are from members of Zapp4: by Oene van Geel, Jeffrey Bruinsma and Jasper Le Clercq, next to pieces by Deurloo, Rembrandt Frerichs, Jaco Pastorius and Ali Farka Touré.. The repertoire has been especially arranged for this ensemble and is full of grooves, improvisation, and interaction.

Hermine Deurloo started on alto saxophone, but after her studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam she taught herself to play the chromatic harmonica. Inspired by Toots Thielemans (Here and there she is said to be his successor) she developed an intimate and lyrical sound. Next to her cooperation with Zapp4, she leads her own quartet (with ao guitarist Jesse van Ruller) and a duo with pianist Rembrandt Frerichs. She’s a frequently asked guest soloist as well; she performed all over the world with musicians such as guitarist Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones), the Metropole Orchestra, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker Kollektief, The Schönberg Ensemble, Candy Dulfer and many more.
