Slowfox is het nieuwe trio van de Duitse bassist Sebastian Gramss.
De slowfox is ook een stijldans uit het begin van de 20e eeuw – een langzame foxtrot – en het zal niet voor niets de naam van dit trio zijn. Bas, altsax en piano maken melodische muziek, die tegelijkertijd relaxed en intens klinkt: poëtische kamerjazz.
Altsaxofonist Hayden Chisholm heeft niet alleen een mooie sound, maar is ook een meester in het gebruik van microtonen (die nog tussen de 2 tonen met de kleinste afstand inzitten). Onzuiver? Nee – spannend! Hij speelt soms ‘om de tonen heen’ – af en toe klinkt het nèt even anders dan anders en dat geeft een enigszins vervreemdend effekt, zonder dat je precies weet waar het vandaan komt. Tegelijkertijd is het, paradoxaal misschien, hele warme muziek.
De titel van de Cd is gebaseerd op een gedicht van Robert Frost:
„The woods are lovely dark and deep,
but I have promises to keep
and miles to go before I sleep
and miles to go before I sleep“
Deze strofen werden opgedeeld en leveren zo de titels van de composities ( Are Lovely; Dark And, etc)
Sebastian Gramss is al vele jaren een bekende grootheid in de Duitse jazz & improscene. Oa met zijn avantgarde rock & jazzband Underkarl en zijn vrije impro trio Fossile 3. Hij heeft meer dan 20 CD’s op zijn naam staan.

In 2014 tijdens Jazzahead Bremen speelde SlowFox zonder pianist (die in het ziekenhuis lag). Het duo droeg alle stukken aan hem op.
Sebastian Gramss studeerde contrabas en compositie in Amsterdam en Keulen. Hij is vooral actief op het gebied van geïmproviseerde, jazz en hedendaagse muziek. Hij heeft meer dan 20 cd’s uitgebracht onder zijn naam oa met Underkarl, de trio’s Slowfox en Fossile3. Hij componeerde voor radio drama, films en theater en – onder meer – voor choreografe Pina Bausch. In 2007 creëerde hij de Spacebass (basso d’amore), een gemodificeerde 4 snarige contrabas met 12 meeklinkende extra snaren.
Avant rock & jazz groep Underkarl werd in 1992 opgericht door Sebastian Gramss en bracht 7 albums uit tot nu toe – waaronder de ECHO-award winnende “Homo Ludens”.

Philip Zoubek is een Oostenrijkse pianist en componist, die jazz-piano studeerde in Wenen en Keulen, waar hij woont sinds 2001. Begonnen vanuit ouder geprepareerde-pianotechnieken zoals bij John Cage, gebruikt Zoubek een breed arsenaal aan materialen zoals aluminium potten, plastic bestek, glazen potten, enz., die resulteren in rijke toon van een noise-achtige percussie tot elektronische sounds. Zoubek werkte oa met Louis Sclavis, Rudi Mahall, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher, Simon Nabatov, Frank Gratkowski, Wilbert de Joode en vele anderen.
Hayden Chisholm is een Nieuw-Zeelandse saxofonist en componist. Na zijn studie in Keulen met studeerde hij in Japan en India. In 1995 ontwikkelde hij een radicaal nieuw microtonaal systeem voor saxofoon , te horen op zijn debuut solo-CD “Circe”. Sindsdien werden zijn composities opgenomen door de BBC en WDR radio en hij heeft getourd en albums opgenomen met oa Root70 (Nils Wogram), WDR Big Band, Musikfabrik Ensemble, en David Sylvian. Hij curator van het jaarlijkse Plushmusic festival in Keulen en Bremen.

Slowfox is the new trio of German bassist Sebastian Gramss.
The slowfox is also a dance style from the early 20th century – a slow foxtrot – and for a reason it’s also the name of this trio. Bass, alto saxophone and piano create melodic music that sounds relaxed and intense at the same time: poetic chamber jazz. Alto saxophonist Hayden Chisholm has a beautiful sound, but is also a master in the use of microtones (the ones inbetween the two with the smallest distance). Out of tune? No – exciting! He plays around the core of the tone sometimes; it sounds just a bit different than usual, and that gives a somewhat alienating effect, without knowing exactly where it comes from. At the same time, paradoxically perhaps, the music sounds very warm. The title of the CD is based on a poem by Robert Frost:

Sebastian Gramss has for years been a leading musician in the German jazz and improv scene. Ao with its avant-garde rock and jazzgroup Underkarl and his free improvisation trio Fossile 3. In 2014 during Jazzahead Bremen played without Slowfox pianist (who was in the hospital). The duo dedicated all the pieces to him.

SEBASTIAN GRAMSS from Cologne, Germany, studied double bass and composition in Amsterdam and Cologne. He is mostly active in the field of improvised, jazz and contemporary music. He has released more than 20 CDs under his name. These include those from the band Underkarl, as well as from the trios SlowFox and Fossile3. He has composed for radio drama, movies and theatre and – among others – for choreographer Pina Bausch. In 2007 he created the Spacebass (basso d’amore), a modified 4 string double bass with the addition of 12 sympathetic strings.
PHILIP ZOUBEK is an Austrian piano player and composer, who studied jazz-piano in Vienna and Cologne, where he lives since 2001. Starting from “traditional” preparation techniques á la Cage, Philip Zoubek has a wide arsenal of preparation material (aluminum pots, plastic utensils, glass jars, etc.), from the rich tone of a noise-like percussion up to electronic sounds.Zoubek worked with Louis Sclavis, Rudi Mahall, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher, Simon Nabatov, Frank Gratkowski, Wilbert de Joode, Thomas Lehn, Clayton Thomas, Paul Lytton, and many others.
Hayden Chisholm is a New Zealand saxophonist and composer. After studying in Cologne with a DAAD scholarship, he continued his music studies in Japan and India. In 1995 he developed a radical new microtonal system for saxophone which he revealed on his debut solo CD “Circe”. Since then, his compositions have been recorded by BBC and WDR radios and he has toured and recorded extensively with the likes of Root70, WDR Big Band, Musikfabrik Ensemble, and David Sylvian. He curates the annual Plushmusic festival in Cologne and Bremen.
