Toen hij haar zijn album Without a Net liet horen, sprong hij steeds op uit zijn stoel en riep dan ‘Did you see that ship floating by? of Oh my God! Did you see that? Isn’t that beautiful?

ENGLISH
Cosmopolitanism and Dutch sobriety.

Tineke Postma, saxophonist, composer and bandleader is the winner of the Buma Boy Edgar Prize 2015, Holland’s most prestigious award in the field of jazz and improvised music.
On the 9th of December she will recieve this prize at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam and will perform with Dutch and international top musicians.

What words did the jury use?:
“Tineke Postma has a remarkable combination of cosmopolitanism and Dutch levelheadedness. How a modest Frisian musician made a career for herself with her own American band and collaborated with the best of the best including Greg Osby, Geri Allen, Esperanza Spalding, Terry Lyne Carrington and Wayne Shorter. “

An also this: “She surely has to sound good, she can even be a virtuoso, but both on alto and soprano saxophone her tone is direct and without adornment. Her luggage has no room for clichés, snags or frills, she picks her notes fastidiously relying on a great sense of melody and harmony.”

Tineke PostmaAfter her years at the conservatory Postma went to study at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. There she met key players of the New York scene, a connection that eventually resulted in performances and recordings with stars like Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding and Scott Colley.
Looking back on her New York experience over the years she says: “I have spent a lot of time on my own in New York to drag myself out of my comfort zone. Being vulnerable brings out the best in me. And I do feel vulnerable when I’m out there. You have no idea how many incredibly talented players – really young boys and girls too! – populate the New York scene. They really made me realize that I had to study even harder.”

Postma’s style of playing is often characterized as post-bop by the critics. Wayne Shorter taught her that each note should contain an image, or should be a word or a sentence in a story. When he played his latest album Without a Net for her, he would jump out of his chair and say Did you see that ship floating by? or Oh my God! Did you see that? Isn’t that terrible? Where Postma used to play notes that would fit in with a certain bass line or chord. Now – she says: “I try to visualize them like Wayne does. That makes a world of difference.”

Tineke Postma herself composed the program for the evening of the ceremony, with musicians of different generations, coming from Europe and America, who are influenced by various musical styles.
First:Tineke Postma Quartet with pianist Marc van Roon, bassist Frans van der Hoeven and drummer Martijn Vink. This Dutch quartet has been around for 10 years and plays work of the Edison-winning CD The Dawn of Light. Lyricism, space, teamwork, intense rhythms and classical influences, such as an arrangement of the modern classical composer Heitor Villa Lobos, are key features.

With celebrity jazz pianist Jasper van’t Hof Tineke plays a duo.
Postma played in Van t Hof’s group Pili Pili (where European jazz is combined with African music). Jasper van ’t Hof played with free jazz spirits as Pierre Courbois back in the sixties and formed the band Pork Pie with guitarist Philip Catherine and saxophonist Charlie Mariano in the seventies. In all those years he’s been playing throughout Europe with many greats in jazz. He also uses various electronic instruments, searching for new timbres.
In her new international group Sonic Halo Tineke Postma stands side by side with her former teachers and band leaders saxophonist Greg Osby (USA) and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington (USA). The compositions of Osby and Postma emit contemporary jazz with hip New York grooves. On this night Sonic Halo plays with pianist Florian Weber (Germany) and Dutch bassist Clemens van der Feen.
