Chris Speed is het niet te doen om een sterrenstatus, hij is niet iemand met een groot ego: veel meer is hij gefocused op het geluid van een groep-als-geheel. Sterker nog, hij omringt zich vaak met collega’s die meer de aandacht trekken dan hij zelf. Hij heeft een mooie ronde toon, en is opvallend genoeg iemand die vaak zacht speelt, en toch opvalt binnen het muzikale geheel.
Speed is een klarinettist en saxofonist die alle stijlen aankan, van klezmer tot avant-jazz, met een voorkeur voor de vrijere vormen van jazz & impro.
Als blazer gebruikt hij uitgebreide technieken op zowel clarinet als tenorsax, altijd op zoek naar nieuwe klanken en mogelijkheden.
Op 31 januari 2016 speelt hij in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam (16:00) met zijn trio met contrabassist Chris Tordini en drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus).
Transparant, opgewekt, messcherp: zo is de muziek elders al omschreven.
Chris Speed bewijst zich al decennialang als een saxofonist die alle stijlen aankan, van klezmer tot avant-jazz. Drummer Dave King is even veelzijdig: met het bekende pianotrio The Bad Plus worden al bijna 20 jaar de grenzen tussen pop en jazz beslecht en de rolverdeling tussen de instrumenten overhoop gegooid. Zoals veel amerikaanse jazzmusici zijn het vakmannen, die hun respect voor de jazztraditie combineren met de ambitie om de muziek vooruit te brengen. Met contrabastalent Chris Tordini bouwden ze een eigen repertoire op met eigen composities naast stukken van Ornette Coleman en John Coltrane.
Chris Speed (afkomstig uit Seattle, wonend in Brooklyn) is éen van de belangrijkste figuren in de dynamische jazz/improv scene in New York. Hij is saxofonist en klarinettist, bandleider van zijn trio, Endangered Blood, Yeah No, Pachora en The Clarinets (met Anthony Burr, Oscar Noriega en Chris Speed. Dit trio richt zich op mooie, geïmproviseerde ambient muziek met alleen 3 klarinetten)

Dit jazzquartet uit Brooklyn begon als benfiet-band voor een zieke vriend, maar ontdekte als het ware zijn eigen potentieel. De muziek put uit postbop, 20e eeuwse chromatische muziek, swingen begrafenismuziek uit New Orleans en andere intelligente gruizigheid.
Eind jaren ’80 brak hij door met Human Feel, all-star energieke avantjazz met Kurt Rosenwinkel – gitaar, Andrew d’Angelo – altsax, Jim Black – drums

Speed begon zijn carrière in de band Bloodcount van saxofonist Tim Berne. Vervolgens speelde hij met Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, John Zorn, Jim Black, Mark Dresser, Taborn Craig, Mary Halvorson, Brad Shepik, John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet.
In 2006 richtte hij het onafhankelijk platenlabel Skirl Records op, bedoeld om het werk van de progressieve jazzmusici in Brooklyn te documenteren.

Chris Speed is not striving for stardom, he is not someone with a big ego: much more he is focused on the sound of a group-as-a whole. In fact, he often surrounds himself with colleagues who attract more attention than he himself. He has a nice round tone, and remarkably enough he’s someone who often plays soft, yet striking in the musical whole.
Speed is a clarinetist and saxophonist who can handle all styles, from avant-klezmer to jazz, with a preference for the freer forms of jazz and improv. He employs elaborate techniques on both clarinet and tenor sax, always looking for new sounds and possibilities.

Drummer Dave King is equally versatile: with the famous piano trio The Bad Plus (overthrowing the boundaries between pop and jazz for almost 20 years, and turning the tables between the instruments). Like many American jazz musicians they are craftsmen who combine their respect for jazz tradition with the ambition to push the music forward.
With bass talent Chris Tordini this trio built its own repertoire with originals alongside pieces by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.
Chris Speed (coming from Seattle, living in Brooklyn) is one of the key figures in the dynamic jazz / improv scene in New York. He is a saxophonist and clarinetist, band leader of his trio; Endangered Blood; Yeah No; Pachora and The Clarinets, a trio that creates acoustic ambient music of grace and beauty, redefining the clarinet in improvised/new music.
Jazz quartet Endangered Blood started as a charity band for an ill friend, but discovered their was more potential to it. The music draws from post bop, 20th century chromatic music, swinging funeral music from New Orleans and other intelligent gritty-ness.
Pachora combines jazz with East European, Mediterranian and Middle East folkmusic (with Brad Shepik tambura/guitar, Skuli Sverrisson bass/electronics, Jim Black drums)
