Leve de basklarinet!
Een rijk en veelzijdig instrument, dat een altijd onderscheidende rol speelt in zowel hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek als in jazz & impro. Met een geluid dat kan variëren van sonoor laag tot rond in het midden en snerpend in de hoogte. Aanleiding voor het Basklarinet Festijn is het afscheid van Nederlands bekendste basklarinettist Harry Sparnaay. Dat wordt gevierd met 3 concerten door 10 toonaangevende basklarinettisten.
10 april Grand Theatre Groningen, 11 april Bimhuis Amsterdam, 13 april Toonzaal Den Bosch.
Daarnaast zijn er nog een masterclass in Groningen, een basklarinetdag voor amateurs in Amsterdam en 2 cd-releases.
De basklarinettisten spelen in verschillende bezettingen en zijn Fie Schouten, Ainhoa Miranda, Laura Carmichael (hedendaags klassiek), Tobias Klein, Oguz Büyükberber (improvisatie), Jelle Althuis (Calefax Rietkwintet), het improvisatie/jazz duo Claudio Puntin en Steffen Schorn, Ernesto Molinari en uiteraard Harry Sparnaay die met het Basklarinet Festijn een punt achter zijn imposante muzikale carrière zet.

Op de concerten verschillende hedendaagse composities en improvisaties, bijvoorbeeld ‘Three for One’ (Roderik de Man),’Basset’ (Guus Janssen), ‘Too Dark To Read’ (Tobias Klein) uitgevoerd door zeven basklarinettisten en drie contrabasklarinettisten. En ‘Ladder of escape’ van Michael Smetanin (zeven basklarinetten en twee contrabasklarinetten).
Ook een concert van Claudio Puntin en Steffen Schorn, twee Duitse rietblazers, die alle klarinetten bezitten, van heel klein en hoog tot heel groot en laag. (Schorn heeft ook nog de hele serie saxofoons van hoog tot laag). Zij zijn in staat om de basklarinetten grondig te laten grooven. Ze waren beiden al veel vaker in Nederland te zien, o.a. met Steffen Schorn’s Universe of Possibilities, en met groepen van Nils Wogram en Martin Fondse.

In de jazz werd de basklarinet eigenlijk pas bekend in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw, met name door Eric Dolphy, die op basklarinet vaak interessanter klonk dan op zijn altsaxofoon. Veel jazzmusici spelen zowel saxofoon(s) als clarinet, en de basklarinet was/is daardoor vaak het 2e instrument van musici (David Murray, Don Byron, Courtney Pine). Zo niet bij de Fransman Louis Sclavis, voor wie de basklarinet wel het hoofdinstrument is en die er een onbetwiste meester op is.
In de Nederlandse jazz & impro zijn verder Joris Roelofs, Michael Moore en David Kweksilber bekend als bespelers van het instrument.
Harry Sparnaay behoort tot ’s werelds grootste basklarinettisten, hij wordt 70 jaar en neemt met dit festival afscheid. Sparnaay is oprichter van het Basklarinet Collectief. Hij gaf concerten op alle belangrijke festivals in de wereld en heeft als solist met vooraanstaande orkesten en ensembles gewerkt. Sparnaay ontving diverse prijzen, zoals de Edison Music Award en de Jan van Gilseprijs.
Voor basklarinet zijn weinig solostukken geschreven. Daarom vroeg Sparnaay gedurende zijn carrière verschillende componisten om speciaal voor hem te componeren. Door de tijd heen leverde dat ruim 650 stukken op, geschreven door o.a.Luciano Berio, Theo Loevendie, Roderik de Man, Morton Feldman, Helmut Lachenmann, en Iannis Xenakis.

Long live the bassclarinet
A rich and versatile instrument always playing a distinctive role in both contemporary composed music as in jazz and improvisation. A sound that can vary from sonorous low until round in the middle and squealing in the high region. The reason for the festival is the ‘saying goodbye’ of the most wellknown bass clarinettist from the Netherlands Harry Sparnaay It is celebrated with three concerts by 10 leading bass clarinetists.
April 10th Grand Theatre Groningen, April 11 Bimhuis Amsterdam, 13 April Toonzaal Den Bosch. There are also a masterclass in Groningen, a bassclarinet-day for amateurs in Amsterdam 2 CD releases.
The bass clarinet players play in different formations. They are Fie Schouten, Ainhoa Miranda, Laura Carmichael (contemporary classical music ), Tobias Klein, Oguz Büyükberber (improvisation), Jelle Althuis (Calefax Reed Quintet), the improvisation/jazz duo Claudio Puntin and Steffen Schorn, Ernesto Molinari and of course Harry Sparnaay, who with the Bassclarinet Fest ends his impressive musical career. Schorn also has the entire series saxophones from top to bottom). They make the bassclarinets groove. They both played several times before in the Netherlands, with Steffen Schorn’s Universe of Possibilities, and with the bands of Nils Wogram and Martin Fondse.
In jazz, the bass clarinet actually got known in the sixties of the last century, particularly by Eric Dolphy, on bass clarinet often sounding more interesting than on his alto saxophone. Many jazz musicians playing both saxophone(‘s) and clarinet, bass clarinet. Therefore it often was/is the 2nd instrument for musicians like David Murray, Don Byron, Courtney Pine. Not so with the Frenchman Louis Sclavis, for whom the bass clarinet is the main instrument and at that he is an undisputed master. Harry Sparnaay belongs to the world’s greatest bass clarinetplayers, he is 70 years old and takes his leave. Sparnaay is founder of the Bass Clarinet Collective. He gave concerts at all the major festivals in the world and has worked with leading orchestras and ensembles. As a soloist Sparnaay received several awards, including the Edison Award and the Jan van Gils Price. There were not that many solopieces written for bass clarinet. Therefore Sparnaay during his career asked several composers to compose for him.
