Uniek, innovatief, complex, betoverend
Craig Taborn – toetsenist uit New York – heeft een volstrekt eigen muzikale taal gecreëerd en is in die zin waarlijk uniek. Zeldzaam getalenteerd en inmiddels wijdverbreid gezien als een van de meest innovatieve toetsenisten van zijn generatie.
Zijn muziek is complex, meerlagig, innovatief, soms minimal, altijd intens. Het is vernieuwende eigentijdse geïmproviseerde muziek die aanschuurt tegen hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek. Je hebt er concentratie voor nodig, maar als je je eraan overgeeft en méégaat in de manier waarop de muziek wordt opgebouwd, is het heel waarschijnlijk dat je erin wordt meegetrokken, betoverd. Al acht jaar vormt hij een hecht piano-trio met contrabassist Thomas Morgan en drummer Gerald Cleaver.

Soms lijkt het misschien of er ‘maar wat’ gespeeld wordt. Schijn bedriegt: er zit vrijwel altijd een structuur onder wat je hoort. Bij een concert van zijn trio kan het soms lijken of de musici langs elkaar heen spelen, maar na een poosje spelen ze dan weer precies iets samen – dat betekent dus dat er al die tijd wel degelijk sprake was van een onderliggende structuur – ook al hoorden wij die niet meteen.
Daardoor blijft het onvoorspelbaar, en spannend om naar zijn muziek te luisteren. De uiterste concentratie waarmee (altijd!) wordt gespeeld, dwingt niet alleen veel bewondering af, maar zorgt er ook voor, dat je zelf als luisteraar ‘bij de les’ blijft. Zeker bij live-uitvoeringen.

Bij Taborn gaat het om het muzikale proces. Samenspelen, instant componeren en improviseren moet zich ontwikkelen. Het duurt dus altijd een tijd voordat hij iets wil opnemen en op CD zetten. Over zijn trio met bassist Thomas Morgan en drummer Gerald Cleaver zegt hij dit: “Ik zocht naar mensen, musici, meer dan naar instrumenten. Het gaat me meer om hun muzikale persoonlijkheden en hun attitude in improvisatie, dan om de instrumenten die ze spelen. Het is dus ook zeker geen traditioneel pianotrio. We zijn alle drie even belangrijk, improviseren gelijkwaardig en altijd sàmen. Geen ‘thema-solo-thema’ in mijn muziek”
Bij soloconcerten begint hij vaak met een melodietje of een kort ritmisch patroon, en bouwt dat dan verder uit naar grotere structuren.
Taborn is erg veelzijdig. Hij speelt piano, maar ook synths (bv. Moog) en Fender Rhodes
Hij speelde niet alleen jazz en vrije impro, maar ook dark ambient en techno. Hij vond inspiratie bij Cecil Taylor. In Nederland konden we hem meer dan eens zien in de bands van Dave Holland, Dave Douglas, Chris Potter en James Carter.
Hij speelde met nog veel meer toonaangevende musici: David Binney, Dave King en Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus), Thomas Stanko, Drew Gress e.v.a.
Hij won meerdere prijzen, w.o. de Paul Acket Award (2012), Down Beat’s Rising Star in de categorieën Piano én Electric Keyboards én Orgel. Inmiddels heeft hij 5 albums onder eigen naam uitgebracht (w.o. twee op het label ECM), en speelt hij als sideman op meer dan 70 platen.

Unique, innovative, complex, enchanting
Craig Taborn – keyboardist from New York – has created a completely ‘own’ musical language , and in that sense is truly unique. Very talented and now widely seen asone of the most innovative keyboard players of his generation. His music is complex, multilayered, innovative, sometimes minimal, always intense. It is innovative improvised music that comes close to contemporary composed music. You need some concentration, but if you surrender and go along with the way the music is constructed, it is very likely that you will be dragged into it, maybe mesmerized.
For eight years now he forms a close-knit piano trio with double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver. Playing at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam on the 8th of october. This concert will be streamed live at Bimhuis Radio ( 20:00- end concert)
Sometimes it may seem that he’s ‘just playing something’, anything. Appearances are deceptive : there is almost always a structure under the music you hear. When playing with his trio it can sometimes seem as if the musicians play completely past each other, but after a while they play something exactly together – so that means that all that time there was in fact an underlying structure – even though we didn’t hear that right away.
So his music is unpredictable, and exciting to listen to. The concentration with which is played , not only enforces admiration, but also ensures that you as a listener stay ‘on the ball’. Especially when live performance.
For Taborn the musical process is essential. Playing together, instant composing and improvising needs some time to develop. Therefore it always takes a while before he wants make recordings. About his trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver, he says this: ” I was looking for people, musicians, more than for instruments. I’m concerned more about their musical personalities and their attitude in improvisation, then about the instruments they play. It’s certainly not a traditional piano trio. We are all equally important, improvise equivalent and always together. No theme-solo-theme in my music”.
In solo concerts he often begins with a melody or a short rhythmic pattern and then builds it further into larger structures .
