Op zaterdag 31 oktober is er voor de 5e keer ‘JazzFest Amsterdam’ in Studio /K in Amsterdam-Oost.
13 concerten in 4 zalen en ook een Jazzfest voor kinderen dit keer!
Het programma biedt acts met opvallende musici uit de Nederlandse en internationale jazzscene: pianiste Myra Melford; Buma Boy Edgarprijswinnaar Tineke Postma; saxofoonkwartet Artvark met zangeres Claron McFadden; Zuco 103; Harmen Fraanje & Anton Goudsmit; Martijn van Iterson trio en duo Maarten Ornstein/Mike Fentross.
Ook jong talent en alumni van het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, die in het afgelopen jaar onmiskenbaar zijn opgevallen zoals pianist Xavi Torres en altsaxofoniste Marike van Dijk; Steel Sheep; Pol Berladi’s Urban Voyage en Attila Gyarfasp Group.

Artvark saxofoonkwartet & Claron McFadden
Saxofoonkwartet Artvark is erg goed in hecht samenspel; ze maken een hele mooie balans, letten heel goed op elkaar en vullen elkaar aan. En ze spelen alle composities en arrangementen uit het hoofd! Artvark brengt al een aantal jaren vernieuwende eigen composities in de categorie Jazz & Groove.
Klassieke sopraan Claron Mc Fadden en Artvark maakten samen het project (en de CD) Sly Meets Callas, speciaal voor deze samenwerking geschreven muziek en het debuut van Claron McFadden als tekstschrijver. Claron McFadden behoort tot de absolute wereldtop in de hedendaagse gecomponeerde muziek. Met Artvark betreedt ze een nieuwe klankwereld: nieuwe kamermuziek op het grensvlak van Ellington en Ravel met een vleugje Edgar Allen Poe.

Myra Melford Snowy Egret
Pianiste Myra Melford speelt met een bont gezelschap in haar huidige band Snowy Egret (‘kleine zilverreiger’). Deze toonaangevende musici uit New York kunnen alles aan, en dat is een vereiste voor de muzikale kruisbestuivingen van Melford. Ze schrijft rijk geschakeerde, verhalende composities en haar pianospel legt de link tussen blues, klassiek, Oosterse muziek en talloze andere stromingen. Sinds 1990 bracht ze meer dan 20 albums uit als bandleider en maakte ze voorstellingen met dans en film. Snowy Egret komt voort uit haar project gewijd aan de boektrilogie ‘Kroniek van het vuur’ van Eduardo Galeano, een uitdagende kijk op de geschiedenis van Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. De culturele rijkdom van het Amerikaanse continent is een belangrijk gegeven in de muziek van Snowy Egret,

Marike van Dijk: The StereographyProject
Altsaxofoniste en componiste Marike van Dijk schreef The Stereography Project in haar woonplaats Brooklyn, New York City. Filmische muziek – met een 12-mansbezetting – waarin lyrische melodieën worden afgewisseld met stevige grooves en met moderne jazz als uitgangspunt. Dit voorjaar werd er een CD van uitgebracht op Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records. Van Dijk kreeg veel positieve reacties en er werd een documentaire over haar leven als musicus in New York gemaakt. Op het festival treedt ze op met een bezetting vergelijkbaar met die van de cd. Met o.a. Ben van Gelder, Mark Schilders en Stefan Lievestro.
Xavi Torres trio
De uit Spanje (Catalonië) afkomstige jonge pianist Xavi Torres won in 2015 de Keep an Eye Interational Jazz Award met zijn Xavi Torres Vicente Trio. Daarnaast won Torres eveneens de prijs voor Beste Solist tijdens de vorige editie van dezelfde competitie. Niet alleen de jury, maar ook de bomvolle zaal was toen ondersteboven van het energieke enthousiasme, het lef en het aanstekelijk positivisme van hun optreden. Het trio speelt eigen werk: Moderne Jazz met hier en daar grooves en/of Spaanse invloeden.
Xavi Torres studeerde zowel in Spanje als in Amsterdam aan conservatoria – jazz, maar ook klassiek.

Duo Maarten Ornstein & Mike Fentross
Jazz en Oude Muziek…gaat dat samen?
Oud, nieuw, oost en west komen samen in de muziek van dit bijzondere duo dat ontstond in de Amsterdamse club Splendor. Jazzmusicus Maarten Ornstein en barok luitist Mike Fentross spelen oude muziek (Dowland, Frescobaldi), nieuwe muziek (Punch Brothers, Ornstein) en muziek uit het Midden-Oosten met een frisse kijk op het materiaal en enorm veel speelplezier. De combinatie van instrumenten levert een rijk en intiem klankbeeld voor een concert waarin jazz en oude muziek op een unieke manier samensmelten. Martijn van Iterson trio
Martijn van Iterson geldt als één van de beste jazzgitaristen van Nederland.
Zijn muziek valt het beste te omschrijven als “eigentijdse jazz met een hart voor traditie”. Met zijn kwartet speelt hij eigen composities.
Samen met Karel Boehlee – piano, Frans van Geest – contrabas en Martijn Vink – drums.
Martijn had les van niemand minder dan de nestor van de Nederlandse jazzgitaar Wim Overgaauw. Hij speelt verder o.a. in het Ilja Reijngoud kwartet, het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, het Ruud Jacobs kwintet en het Sjoerd Dijkhuizen kwartet en is daarnaast een veelgevraagd gastsolist.
In 2004 won hij de Bird Award (North Sea Jazz).

Jazz Fest Amsterdam
On Saturday, October 31st the 5th edition of “Jazz Fest Amsterdam at Studio/K in East Amsterdam.
13 concerts in four halls and a Jazz Fest for kids this time! Young talent and alumni of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, who undeniably made a name for themselves in the past year such as pianist Xavi Torres and alto saxophonist Marike van Dijk; Steal Sheep; Pol Berladi’s Urban Voyage and Attila Gyarfasp Group.

Artvark & Claron McFadden
Saxophone Quartet Artvark is very good in tight interplay; their sound is balanced perfectly, they really pay careful attention and complement each other. And they play all compositions and arrangements by heart! for a number of years now Artvark brings innovative compositions in the Jazz & Groove department.
Classical soprano Claron Mc Fadden and Artvark joined to make the project (and the CD) Sly Meets Callas. With written music especially for this collaboration and the debut of Claron McFadden as a lyricist. Claron McFadden belongs to the absolute world top in the contemporary composed music. With Artvark she enters a new world of sound: new chamber music at the interface between Ellington and Ravel with a touch of Edgar Allen Poe.

Myra Melford Snowy Egret
Pianist Myra Melford plays with a colorful cast of her current band Snowy Egret. These leading musicians from New York can play everything, and that is a prerequisite for the musical cross-pollination of Melford. She writes multifaceted narrative compositions and her playing makes the link between blues, classical, Eastern music and countless other movements. Since 1990 she released more than 20 albums as a bandleader and she made performances with dance and film. Snowy Egret stems from her project dedicated to the book trilogy “Chronicle of Fire ‘by Eduardo Galeano, a challenging look at the history of North and South America. Marike van Dijk: The StereographyProject
Alto saxophonist and composer Marike van Dijk wrote The Stereography Project in Brooklyn, New York City, where she lives. Cinematic music – with a 12-piece ensemble – in which lyrical melodies alternate with solid grooves and has modern jazz as a starting point. This spring a CD was released on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records. Van Dijk received many positive reactions and a documentary about her life as a musician was made in New York. At the festival performs with a capacity comparable to that of the CD. With ao Ben van Gelder, Mark Schilders and Stefan Lievestro.
Xavi Torres
Coming young pianist Xavi Torres from Spain (Catalonia) won the Interational Keep an Eye Jazz Award with his Xavi Torres Vicente Trio in 2015. Not only the jury, but also the packed hall was blown away by the energetic enthusiasm, the courage and the infectious positivism of their show. The trio plays own work: Modern Jazz with aome grooves and Spanish influences.
Xavi Torres studied both in Spain and Amsterdam conservatories – jazz but also classical.

Duo Maarten Ornstein & Mike Fentross
Jazz and Ancient Music … do they go together? Old, new, east and west come together in the music of this extraordinary duo that emerged in the Amsterdam club Splendor. Jazz musician Maarten Ornstein and baroque lutenist Mike Fentross playing ancient music (Dowland, Frescobaldi), new music (Punch Brothers, Ornstein) and music from the Middle East with a fresh look at the material and a lot of fun. Martijn van Iterson trio
Martijn van Iterson is considered one of the best jazz guitarists in the Netherlands. His music is best described as “contemporary jazz with a passion for tradition.” With his own quartet, he plays his own compositions. Karel Boehlee – piano, French Spirit – bass and Martijn Vink – drums
Martijn was taught by none other than the father of the Dutch jazz guitar Wim Overgaauw.
Net to this he plays in ao the Ilja Reijngoud quartet, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, the Ruud Jacobs Sjoerd Dijkhuizen quintet and quartet, and is also much in demand as a guest soloist. In 2004 he won the Bird Award (North Sea Jazz).
