Joris Posthumus was altijd al een energieke postbop saxofonist met een scherpe altsax sound en een tomeloze inzet. Dat kwam in al zijn composities en in al zijn groepen uit de verf. Nu brengt hij een album uit met Japanse jazzvrienden: Tokyo’s Bad Boys.
Eigen stukken met een felle jazz-drive naast ballads. In een leuke bezetting met drie saxen, die samen zo nu en dan klinken als een lekker jazz-orgel.

In 2011 was Joris Posthumus op tournee in het Verre Oosten met de band State of Monc. Tijdens deze tour ontmoette hij in China de Japanse saxofonist Yuichiro Tokuda die ook met zijn band op tournee was. Beide saxofonisten bleven contact houden en nodigden elkaar achtereenvolgens uit om in Japan (2014) en daarna in Nederland (2015) mee te komen spelen in elkaars band. Die concerten werden heel enthousiast ontvangen. En zo vertrok Joris in september 2015 wederom naar Japan om een album op te nemen.
Het album komt nu (september 2016) uit; gevolgd door een Japanse tournee in november met 15 concerten. In april 2017 wordt het album in Nederland en België gepresenteerd in een serie concerten. Onder andere op 5 april 2017 in Paradox Tilburg.
Joris Posthumus speelt verder oa ook in Zeeland Suite Revisited van Jeroen van Vliet, met zijn eigen bands Ruff Sound Quartet en het Joris Posthumus Quartet. Daarnaast in het kwartet van pianist Jacob Bedaux.
Joris Posthumus begon met muziek op zijn zesde jaar. Hij studeerde aan de conservatoria van Rotterdam en Tilburg en formeerde in die tijd ook al zijn eigen groepen. Hij speelde met musici uit de Nederlandse jazzscene als Wolter Wierbos, Martijn Vink, Ben van den Dungen en Yuri Honing.
Joris vroeg pianist Jeroen van Vliet en drummer Pascal Vermeer (beiden eveneens afkomstig uit de Tilburgse jazzscene) in zijn kwartet, en samen speelden zij vier concerten met de amerikaanse saxofonist David Murray. In 2009 kwam het kwartetalbum The Abyss uit en daarna werd de naam van de band veranderd in Joris Posthumus Quartet. Dynamische jazz met veel NU-bop energie.
Dat laatste is karakteristiek voor de muziek van Posthumus, evenals het belang van melodie in zijn stukken en zijn bijtende altsaxgeluid.
Met Pascal Vermeer begon hij in 2010 ook het project Ornette!!! – met muziek van Ornette Coleman. Free jazz en vrijere impro maakte hij oa met drummer Yonga Sun en Hammond jazz met Arno Krijger en drummer Pascal Vermeer.

Joris Posthumus always has been an energetic bop saxophonist with a sharp alto saxophone sound and boundless dedication. To be heard in all of his compositions and in all his bands. This month a new album is released that Posthumus made with his Japanese jazz friends: Tokyo’s Bad Boys. Originals with a fierce drive next to jazz ballads. In a fine line-up with three saxophones, who together occasionally sound like a nice jazz organ. In 2011, Joris Posthumus went on tour in the Far East with the band State of Monc. During this tour he met the Japanese saxophonist Yuichiro Tokuda who also was on tour with his band. Both saxophonists kept in contact and invited each other in succession to come over do a tour with each others band, in Japan in 2014 and in 2015 in the Netherlands and Belgium. Those concerts were received very enthusiastically. And so in September 2015 Joris took off again to Japan to record an album.
The album is out now (September 2016); and there will be a Japanese tour in November with 15 concerts. In April 2017 the album is presented in the Netherlands and Belgium in a series of concerts. Among others on April 5, 2017 in Paradox Tilburg

Joris Posthumus started playing music at the age of six. He studied at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Tilburg and formed his own groups. He played with musicians from the Dutch jazz scene suc as Wolter Wierbos, Martijn Vink, Ben van den Dungen and Yuri Honing.

In 2009, the quartet album The Abyss came out and then the name of the band was changed to Joris Posthumus Quartet. Dynamic jazz with lots of NU-bop energy.
The latter is characteristic of the music of Posthumus, next to the importance of melody in his compositions and his biting altosaxophone sound.
With Pascal Vermeer he started the project Ornette !!! in 2010 – with music by Ornette Coleman. Free jazz and improv he played with ao drummer Yonga Sun and Hammond jazz with Arno Krijger and drummer Joost van Schaik.
