Basklarinet: Joris Roelofs; Tobias Klein/Ogüz Buyukberber

Joris Roelofs – basklarinet, Matt Penmann – bas, Ted Poor – drums

ENGLISH
A rich and versatile instrument it is it: the bass clarinet.
With a sound that can range from sonorous low until around the middle and shrill in the high region It always plays a distinctive role in both contemporary music and in jazz and improvisation *. In this blog, a feature for three bass clarinetists: Joris Roelofs, Tobias Klein and Oguz Büyükberber. They released new CDs this month.

CD Amateur Dentist (Pirouet Records) by Joris Roelofs trio

Joris Roelofs- clarinet, Matt Penmann – bass, Ted Poor – drums

A beautiful tone, technical control, rich musical ideas, narrative soloos.
Reed player Joris Roelofs has been widely praised for these things. A new album of his trio was released this month: Amateur Dentist. Just like on the previous album (Aliens Deliberating) it’s open music, in a free approach to jazz and free jazz and with a lot of improvisation. Joris Roelofsgoes deep and regularly makes you think of that other improvising jazz greatness on bass clarinet Eric Dolphy.
Roelofs plays his instrument melodic and rhythmic, both subtle and passionate in the soloos.
The three musicians are equivalent, they can exchange musical roles: the bass sometimes plays melody, the drums plays solos as well; the bass clarinet not only takes on melodies and solos, but also fills in rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment.
The story of Joris Roelofs (and trio) is not finished yet; it’s still in development. So far it only gets better.

Joris Roelofs is saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist, and started in classical music (clarinet) when he was six. During his master’s degree at the Conservatory he received many invitations for guest performances in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, the Vienna Art Orchestra and the New Cool Collective. In 2004 he went studying in New York for a while with saxophonists Chris Potter, Seamus Blake and Mark Turner. In 2007 he graduated cum laude.

Joris Roelofs plays in the group of guitarist Reinier Baas; with Jesse van Ruller and Clemens van der Feen in the ‘Chamber Tones’, with singer/pianist Maartje Meijer. In the spring of 2016 he will perform a number of times in duo with drummer Han Bennink.
*In jazz, the bass clarinet became known in the sixties of the last century, particularly by Eric Dolphy, on bass clarinet often sounding more interesting than on his alto saxophone. Many jazz musicians playing both saxophone(‘s) and clarinet, bass clarinet. Therefore it often was/is the 2nd instrument  for musicians like David Murray, Don Byron, Courtney Pine. Not so with the Frenchman Louis Sclavis, for whom the bass clarinet is the main instrument and at that he is an undisputed master. In Dutch jazz and improv Joris Roelofs, Tobias Klein, Oguz Büyükberber and Michael Moore are known as performers on the instrument. In contemporary music Harry Sparnaay is one of the world’s greatest bass clarinetists

CD Reverse Camouflage (Trytone) Oğuz Büyükberber/Tobias Klein.

Oguz Büyükberber and Tobias Klein perform as a duo since 2005, improvising on bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet and Bb clarinet.
Soundscapes, making rhythms with the valves of their instrument, harmonics, double tones, blowing in extra air: in their improvisations these two clarinetists are definitely looking for (unused) possibilities of the instrument.
Themes, melody and harmony are often absent, although there are underlying structures. It is not easy to achieve an interesting result in this manner. But it’s exciting: to do – and also to follow. As a listener, you are a ‘part of the process’ a little bit when you follow the musical quest.
