DANIEL ERDMANN VELVET REVOLUTION (D/F/UK)
Daniel Erdmann – tenorsax, Théo Ceccaldi – viool, altviool, Jim Hart – vibrafoon

Théo Ceccaldi – viool, altviool, Guillaume Aknine – gitaar, Valentin Ceccaldi – cello

CORONADO (F)
Gilles Coronado – gitaar, Matthieu Metzger – altsax, elektronica, Antonin Rayon – hammond B3, keyboards, Franck Vaillant – drums, elektronica

ARLING/MARIS/WIND (NL/B)
Bart Maris – trompetten, Remco Wind – keyboards, Harry Arling – drums

GORAN KRMAC KVARTET
(SI)
Goran Krmac – tuba, elektronica, Eduardo Raon – harp, elektronica, Janez Dovc – accordeon, elektronica, Nino Mureškič – drums

The Still (D)
Rico Repotente – gitaar, Derek Shirley – contrabas, Steve Heather – drums
The Still is een internationaal gezelschap dat neergestreken is in Berlijn. The Still maakt trage soundscapes. Ze zetten hypnotiserende, minimalistische, ongehaaste grooves neer. Gitarist Rico Repotente klinkt als Gabor Szabo on acid.

Text below is taken from the ZJFT website

DANIEL ERDMANN VELVET REVOLUTION (D/F/UK)
Daniel Erdmann – tenorsax, Théo Ceccaldi – violin, viola, Jim Hart – vibraphone

Five years ago Daniel Erdmann was present at the SJCT with Das Kapital, performing their takes on compositions by Hanns Eisler. His latest project sounds considerably milder: Velvet Revolution. In addition to the melodic saxophonist Erdmann it features the golden boy of the new French jazz: the energetic violinist Théo Ceccaldi. The British vibraphonist Jim Hart plays an important role in the line-up, too. They form a tightly-knit outfit, making a loose kind of chamber music, where glow worms will sometimes take off. Daniel Erdmann writes sympathetic, light-footed pieces as the starting point for fiery improvisations.

THÉO CECCALDI TRIO (F)
Théo Ceccaldi – violin, alto violin, Guillaume Aknine – guitar, Valentin Ceccaldi – cello

Now and again a young French musician is called the new revelation. The French seem to have hit the nail on the head about Théo Ceccaldi. On stage the 28-year-old violinist bursts with energy. His decisiveness also shows from his seven groups, which he has bundled into a tri-collective. In addition, he is also featured in some ten other ensembles with various young musicians. The musicianship of this French busy bee is perhaps best featured in his own string trio. In this he is joined on stage by his brother, cellist Valentin Ceccaldi, and guitarist Guillaume Aknine. You may expect three virtuosos, who can easily hop from one genre to the next. A joy for the ear.

CORONADO (F)
Gilles Coronado – guitar, Matthieu Metzger – alto sax, electronics, Antonin Rayon – hammond B3, keyboards, Franck Vaillant – drums, electronics

The French guitarist Gilles Coronado obviously loves English jazz rock from the 1970s. When he performed with the band Melc in Dick’s barn, nine years ago, it distinctly smelled of Robert Wyatt’s Matching Mole. In his new outfit Coronado the smell of King Crimson sometimes comes wafting out. What you may expect is a compact band sound featuring weird guitar lines, a jazzy alto saxophonist with a predilection for Steve Coleman and meaty organ riffs, propelled by a brilliant drummer, Franck Vaillant. There’s nothing wrong with the golden years. In France progrock is still being sold over the counter.

ARLING/MARIS/WIND (NL/B)
Bart Maris – trumpets, Remco Wind – keyboards, Harry Arling – drums

Drummer Harry Arling has been active on the Groningen music scene since the 1980s. With his brother Gerry, he formed a ferocious rhythm tandem which supported guitarist Marc Ribot at the Les Trois Jours festival back in 1997. After this the Arling brothers went on to make youth theatre productions. Harry started specializing in his Kosmotroniks (science fiction miniatures). As a drummer he was the power house for many different groups: from All Ears and Baritone Madness to Electric Barbarian, where he met the Belgian trumpeter Bart Maris. He formed this new trio specially for the SJCT, and they will perform some pieces by Gerry Arling, among others.

GORAN KRMAC KVARTET (SI)
Goran Krmac – tuba, electronics, Eduardo Raon – harp, electronics, Janez Dovc – accordion, electronics, Nino Mureškič – drums

When young Goran Krmac was a student at the Groningen conservatory, the tuba player was asked by teacher Michael Moore to join Available Jelly. After a brief membership of this legendary band he decided to return to his native Slovenia, where he assembled an amazing quartet. His new Kvartet surprises, not only because of its unusual line-up (tuba with harp, accordion and percussion), but also because of its musical concept. With a subtle use of contemporary electronics Krmac’s Kvartet offers an enchanting, cinematic mix of world music and modern jazz.

THE STILL (D)
Rico Repotente – guitar, Derek Shirley – double bass, Steve Heather – drums

The Still is an international ensemble that operates from Berlin. The Australian drummer Steve Heather is perhaps best known in jazz cycling country for his work with reedist Tobias Delius and bassist Joe Williamson in Booklet. The new guitar trio features a Canadian bassist and a German on guitar. The Necks pianist Chris Abrahams sometimes guests with the band, and that might give you an idea of the music. They churn out hypnotic, minimalist, unhurried grooves. Guitarist Rico Repotente sounds like Gabor Szabo on acid. In Berlin, The Still has already gained the reputation of a cult band, and now it’s Sauwerd’s turn to experience the same.

Furthermore: The legendary American rhythm section William Parker and Hamid Drake play with saxophonist John Dikeman. British pianist Steve Beresford is heard with Luc Houtkamp and Martin Blume.
Belgian trumpeter Bart Maris is here, this year as a guest of the Groninger drummer Harry Arling.
For fans of the vibraphone: can be heard in three formations: Jim Hart (Velvet Revolution), Charly Birkenhauer (Mullet) or René van Astenrode (Bert van Erk 22? 69 !.
Dutch bassists Ernst Glerum and Wilbert de Joode with their trios.
Two projects where young musicians storm the stage: Dutch Impro Academy and Anton Goudsmit with the NJJO.
In the evening after the traditional DJ battle of DJ Sem and Yeah Man, it is up to the Ronald Snijders Band to set the tent in motion.
The Prologue, the opening evening in the city of Groningen on Friday 25 August is this year in Huis de Beurs.
