Northsea Jazz Festival 2017 (1)

Op 7, 8 en 9 juli van dit jaar gaat het weer los in Ahoy in Rotterdam met het Northsea Jazz Festival 2017: 150 optredens verdeeld over 14 podia.
In 7 blogs komen een aantal acts (bekend èn nog niet bekend) hier audio/visueel aan bod. Vandaag de 1e aflevering, met een groot aantal optredende artiesten waarover ik op deze site al eerder een blog gepubliceerd heb. Ik verwijs er graag nog eens naar. Klik op de naam van de artiest in de tekst en je wordt doorgestuurd naar de betreffende pagina.

Daarna 6 afleveringen over respectievelijk het LAB Trio (België), trompettist Avishai Cohen (USA); pianist David Helbock (Oostenrijk); Dinosaur (Engeland); pianist Robert Glasper (USA); pianist McCoy Tyner (USA).

Zoals gebruikelijk zijn er drie speciale features op NSJF:
Saxofonist Donny McCaslin krijgt de Paul Acket Award.
Hoornist Morris Kliphuis heeft de jaarlijkse compositie opdracht.
Artist in residence is pianist Chick Corea.

Donny McCaslin     zondag 9 juli    22:00        Hudson
De Paul Acket Award wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt door het North Sea Jazz Festival en is bestemd voor artiesten die een bredere publieke erkenning verdienen voor hun buitengewone muzikale kwaliteit. Donny McCaslin is een saxofonist met een progressieve fusion sound en een geweldige techniek op zijn instrument. Hij speelde mee op het laatste album van David Bowie, maar is vooral bekend geworden door concerten met zijn eigen bands of in die van oa Gary Burton. Maria Schneider, en in Steps Ahead.

Morris Kliphuis    vrijdag 7 juli 17:15        Madeira

Hoornist Morris Kliphuis kennen we waarschijnlijk het best van zijn trio Kapok, dat vanaf 2012 een fris en onconventioneel geluid liet horen in de jazzscene met grooves uit rock en rootsmuziek samen met jazz en improvisatie. 
De compositievoor NSJF ‘Dimlicht’wordt uitgevoerd door een geheel nieuw sextet, samengesteld uit muzikanten met verschillende achtergronden, van synth-pop tot aan free jazz en klassiek.

Artist in residence Chick Corea speelt op alle drie de dagen. Hij is al vele jaren een gast op NSJF. Hij staat al decennia aan de top, vanaf de tijd dat hij meespeelde met Miles Davis (oa op de albums In A Silent Way en Bitches Brew). Spannende cross-overs maakte hij in de jaren ’70 ook al met zijn jazzrockband Return To Forever.
Op vrijdag speelt hij met zijn Elektric Band, op zaterdag met banjospeler Bela Fleck, op zondag als solist en componist met het Trondheim Jazz Orchestra uit Noorwegen

Op vrijdag 7 juli treden een aantal jazzartiesten op, die de laatste paar jaar zijn opgevallen door hun vooruitstrevende muzikale aanpak. Bijvoorbeeld drummer Makaya McCraven met zijn Organic Beat Music; Mark Guiliana, die een flinke cultstatus heeft opgebouwd als drummer die alles kan en thuis is in zowel hardbop als nieuwe beats uit hiphop en elektronische dansmuziek.
Zanger/ud speler Dhafer Youssef, bekend om zijn indringende manier van zingen, zijn weemoedige melodiëen, zijn crossover van arabische muziek en jazz.
Ook trompettist Avishai Cohen – die in een apart blog wordt gefeatured.
Snarky Puppy toetsenist Cory Henry met zijn Funk Apostels. Op zondag speelt hij ook, dan als gast bij het Metropole Orkest, samen met vocalist Jacob Collier.

Op vrijdag ook Nederlandse jazzmusici, die aan de weg timmeren, zoals altsaxofonist Maarten Hogenhuis, die afgelopen jaar opviel met zijn nieuwe ‘gevoelige’ album. Naast groovejazz in powervampband Bruut! speelt Hogenhuis ook vaak ‘echte’ jazz en laat daarbij horen dat hij geworteld is in en liefde heeft voor traditionele jazz.
Drummer Mark Schilders met zijn project Fabrik: open en onderzoekende muziek. Schilders speelt op vrijdag ook met het Moon Trio van pianist Jeroen van Vliet: mooi, acoustisch, en subtiel gebruik van electronische effekten.
Bassist Ernst Glerum met zijn Glerum Omnibus, een band met een wisselende line-up. Hier bestaat het trio uit Ernst Glerum – bas, Timothy Banchet – piano en Jamie Peet – drums. Sterke eigen composities, groovy en jazzy tegelijk.

Op zaterdag 8 juli de Nederlanders Rogier Telderman, Eric Vloeimans, de band All Ellington.


En ook Estafest, kwartet met vier Nederlandse toppers Oene van Geel, Mete Erker, Anton Goudsmit en Jeroen van Vliet. Een groep die laveert tussen improvisatie en compositie, tussen melodieus en abstract, tussen individueel en collectief.
En gitarist Michiel Stekelenburg met stevige groovy jazz met een rock-inslag.
Op diezelfde dag ook pianist David Helbock (Oostenrijk) en het engelse Dinosaur van trompettiste Laura Jurd. Beiden worden gefeatured in een apart blog in deze serie.
Vermeldenswaard is ook nog bassist Christian McBride, straight ahead jazz van hoog niveau.

Ook op zondag 9 juli veel hoogtepunten. Naast de al eerder genoemde Donny McCaslin en Cory Henry op deze dag ook trompettist Ambrose Akinmusire, een originele, poëtische virtuoos, die zowel liefhebbers van hedendaagse jazz als van pop weet aan te spreken.
De soms speels dan weer abstract improviserende basclarinettist Ziv Taubenfeld; de veelzijdige Engelse pianist Dominic J Marshall met zijn jazz & beats van Nu; de Nederlandse altsaxofonist Ben van Gelder, die onder andere samenwerkte met generatiegenoten als Ambrose Akinmusire en Aaron Parks. In Nederland speelde hij onder meer in The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble en in zijn trio met Reinier Baas en Han Bennink.


Veteraan pianist McCoy Tyner speelt met zijn trio en twee pianisten die door hem beïnvloed zijn: Craig Taborn en Geri Allen. Ook crossover pianist Robert Glasper speelt.  Over deze beiden meer in een apart nieuw blog in deze serie.

On July 7, 8 and 9, it’s happening again at Ahoy in Rotterdam: Northsea Jazz Festival 2017 with 150 performances on14 stages.
In 7 blogs a number of acts (wellknown and less known) are featured here with audio/video. Today the 1st episode, with a large number of performing artists I’ve previously blogged about on this site. I would like to refer to these blogs again. Please click on the artist’s name in the DUTCH text above and you will be redirected to the appropriate page.

The Paul Acket Award is awarded annually by the North Sea Jazz Festival and is intended for artists who deserve wider public recognition for their extraordinary musical quality. Donny McCaslin is a saxophonist with a progressive fusion sound and a great technique on his instrument. He participated in David Bowie’s last album, but is especially known for energetic concerts with his own bands as well as in groups of others, such as Gary Burton, Maria Schneider, and in Steps Ahead.

French hornplayer Morris Kliphuis is probably best know from his trio Kapok that since 2012 brought a fresh and unconventional sound in the jazz scene with rock music grooves together with jazz and improvisation. The composition for NSJF ‘Dimlicht’ is performed by a completely new sextet of musicians with different backgrounds, from synth pop to free jazz and classical.

Artist in residence Chick Corea will perform on all three days. He has been a guest at NSJF for many years. He has been at the top for decades, from the time he played with Miles Davis (including on the albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew). He made xciting cross-overs in the 1970s with his jazz rockband Return To Forever.
On Friday he plays with his Electric Band, on Saturday with banjo player Bela Fleck, on Sunday as soloist and composer with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra from Norway.

On Friday July 7th, a number of jazz performers will appear, who have been standing out the last few years in their advanced musical approach. For example, drummer Makaya McCraven with his Organic Beat Music; Mark Guiliana, who has built up a great cult status as a drummer who can play anything and is at home in both hardbop as in hip and new beats and electronic dance music.
Singer/Ud Player Dhafer Youssef, famous for his penetrating way of singing, his melancholic melodies and his crossover of Arabic music and jazz.
Snarky Puppy keyboardist Cory Henry with his Funk Apostles. On Sunday, Henry also plays as a guest at the Metropole Orchestra together with vocalist Jacob Collier.
Also trumpeter Avishai Cohen performs – which is being featured in a separate blog.

On Friday, outstanding Dutch jazz musicians like alto saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis, who scored highly last year with his new ‘sensitive’ album. Next to groovejazz in powervampband Bruut! Hogenhuis also often plays “real” jazz, showing that he is rooted in and has love for traditional jazz.
Drummer Mark Schilders with his project Fabrik: open and investigative music. Schilders also plays on Friday with the Moon Trio of pianist Jeroen van Vliet: beautiful acoustic music with subtle use of electronic effects.
Bassist Ernst Glerum with his Glerum Omnibus, a band with a varying lineup. The trio consist of Ernst Glerum – bass, Timothy Banchet – piano and Jamie Peet – drums. Strong own compositions, groovy and jazzy at the same time.

On Saturday the 8th of July the Dutch jazzscene is represented by Rogier Telderman, Eric Vloeimans, and the band All Ellington.
And also Estafest, quartet with four Dutch topmusicians Oene van Geel, Mete Erker, Anton Goudsmit and Jeroen van Vliet. A group that navigates between improvisation and composition, between melodious and abstract, between individual and collective.
Also guitarist Michiel Stekelenburg with solid groovy jazz with a rock feature.
On the same day also pianist David Helbock (Austria) and the English Dinosaur of trumpet Laura Jurd. Both are featured in a separate blog in this series.
Also worth mentioning is bassist Christian McBride, high-level straight ahead jazz.

Also many highlights on July 9th. In addition to the previously mentioned Donny McCaslin and Cory Henry, on this day trumpetist Ambrose Akinmusire, an original poetic virtuoso, who is able to appeal to both contemporary jazz and pop fans.
The playful improvising bass clarinettist Ziv Taubenfeld; the versatile English pianist Dominic J Marshall with his jazz & beats of Now; the Dutch alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder, who worked together with Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks. In the Netherlands he plays in The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble and in his trio with Reinier Baas and Han Bennink.

Veteran pianist McCoyTyner plays with his trio and two pianists who are influenced by him: Craig Taborn and Geri Allen. Crossover pianist Robert Glasper also plays. About both these musicians more in a separate blog in this series.
